EasySpamKiller ComponentPlugin

EasySpamKiller

This is our attempt to protect Joomla! against spam.

It works with the good old blacklisting provided by.

* StopForumSpam
* Project Honeypot

Please note: EasySpamKillerHelper is required for all other plugins

feedback please ;-)

Report

I downloaded this component having found it through the SOBI plugin, and I have to say I wasn't that optimistic but it has been PHENOMENAL in stopping the spam.

I had so many what I call manual spammers - they actually sit there and type the captcha fields out so don't get caught by the normal methods.

Because this queries the blacklists of known spammers by IP address, username and email, it catches probably about 98% of the spam.

I have had one or two false positives, but the benefits far outweigh the inconvenience (and if someone is blacklisted incorrectly they can apply to be removed, incidentally).

I would like to see this component developed further - for example enabling the redirection to a content article within the site rather than the die loud page (which could really do with looking a little bit more professional - I developed my own).

All in all, a VERY useful component which I will be following closely - I hope it goes on to expand!
Wanted to use this to protect my EasyBook Guestbook from spammers.

It took a while to figure out how to install it, its not complicated, but the instructions are scattered.

When you go to download the file you can download the "Full Package" this includes spam protection for other "Easy" modules etc. It also includes the EasySpamHelper which is needed.

Once you install it via Joomla Admin Interface you have to open the entry.php file and add some code.

Thats it. Your installed.

I only just did it this morning, so it hasnt had a chance to prove itself.

Now active for two weeks and no spam whatsoever in Easybook, altough a minimum of one attempt per day is reported via the mailallert option. Even an attack of 1 attempt per 2 minutes for two hours was resisted succesfully.

Installation is easy if you follow the guidelines. Changing the script entry.php by hand is the most tricky part.

I found it a bit confusing to seperately have to download EasySpamKillerHelper and EasySpamKillerEasybook. Had to read the instructions three times to understand. But then, I am no Joomla expert ;-) If the class is required I would suggest (if possible) to include it in the EasySpamKillerEasybook package.

The video tutorial I found about installing was helpfull. German language of it probably a barrier for the rest of the world if you're not German or Dutch like me.

A very good feature of the package is the use of standard initiatives like StopForumSpam and Project Honeypot.

Conclusion after two weeks of use: it works and installation is relatively easy if you take the right steps and carefully read the instructions.
