I am a Technical Director for a company, creating an extranet portal for our partners in Joomla with JomSocial. As part of this process, I searched for security components that could block registration of accounts that are not from persons employed by business partners, employees, or customers. I needed it quickly as the next version of our portal was under development and needed to be released to the market shortly.
Unfortunately, at the time, only this tool came up as a tool that would function properly with JomSocial and would provide a "whitelist" of approved email domains and block everything else.
The developer states on their web site "No Refunds - so make certain you know what you are purchasing". Well, I knew what I was purchasing, but what I did not know was the poor quality of the component and the extreme slowness of technical support for the product.
1. After purchasing this component for 99 Euros, it took two days for the product download to appear in my downloads area on the "Foobla" web site. This only happened after I sent an urgent email to the finance guy who accepts payments: s4vietnam@gmail.com
2. After the extension was posted, I tried to install it, but there was an XML bug in the file and Joomla wouldn't recognize it as a valid installer. This was eventually fixed.
3. After installing the component, I tried to use it as a "whitelist" to block all email domains except for the ones that are in an approved list. This did not function properly and would still let other domains register, even if they weren't on the whitelist. I asked for assistance from Foobla in an Urgent support message. 26 November 2009, Issue submitted. 27 November - no response. 28 Nov - no response. 29 Nov - no response. 30 Nov - submitted urgent email to Finance Person's personal email "s4vietnam@gmail.com". Received response. Problem fixed.
4. I tested the component again and this time another area was broken, so much so that the registration system would crash PHP with an out of memory error.
I asked for a refund based upon good faith that they would understand the need for reliability. Foobla refused.
Please beware when dealing with Foobla. Their policy of not allowing for refunds, not allowing for ANY testing of the component prior to purchase, and their extremely slow responsiveness makes it very difficult to run any sort of critical site with their components.
Instead, if you need a reliable registration whitelist, antispam black list, etc. plugin for Joomla that works with Community Builder, JomSocial, etc. go with "Registration Validator" made by http://www.cedit.biz.
