This extension works very fine. It is complete and practice. In my opinion, it is an essential component for each Joomla! website.
Had several issues which I posted in the support forum. They very quickly narrowed down the sticking points and gave me other approaches to try to further isolate the problem.
In the end, got everything working and now it is "as smooth as silk." This makes moving my site from one host to another very easy. Can't say enough positive things about this extension.
I have used this software now for over a year. All my Web design students complete their semester with a lab on how to use Akeeba to backup and restore their Joomla! sites. THANK YOU for a professional product and great user support!!!
This is the best support so far I experienced with Joomla extensions.
It installed nicely and when run manually backed up my site and database as described...but the description and the documentation isn't written very well in my opinion. I thought I'd be able to run a CRON job to automate these backups (the only reason for me to have this extension) and only after searching and hunting around, after hours of going back and forth from cPanel to the documentation, did I manage to find out through one of many searches on the support forum that this function is only available in the pro paid for version. Now that's fair enough, but at least make it plainly simple to everyone that the core version is manual only.
Backing up my site files isn't a difficult task and something I do manually via FTP once a week anyway and I already have MySQLDumper (a fantastic free program) to carry out nightly automatic, via CRON, database backups...so for me I'm afraid that this extension is pointless. So now it's uninstalled.
I'm not angry, just disappointed.
Not well written documentation?! How do you know that if you never read it AT ALL? I know you never bothered reading it, because the first section in the "Automating Your Backup" chapter is titled "Front-end backup". This feature is available in the Core release and this chapter contains step-by-step instructions for creating a backup CRON job for your site: http://is.gd/dQ6jO You should have read the documentation or asked in our forum. We're there 24/7 and we do it for free.
BTW, Akeeba Backup is not for lazy people. It's for smart people who understand that being tied up 90 minutes in front of a PC to perform a single site backup is stupid when it can be done in 2 minutes without requiring their presence in front of the PC. It's all a matter of perspective.
The very fact that our own site is on-line is a proof that what you're saying is absolutely false. You should have asked for help. It's free and 24/7.
That said, your problem lies elsewhere. The CREATE TABLE command is *directly* fetched from the source server while backing up. Check your original site. Are the tables correctly set up? If they are, try creating a table with an auto number field on your client's server. Does it work? You'll certainly see that one of those checks fails and there is your problem.
It wasnt until recently that i had to restore a site from a backup and it is actually easier than installing joomla - now when i build a new site i start with my akeeba back up file and then restore this which gives me a fresh install which includes all of my extensions, plugins, content and even settings
the only thing i havent found too easy was the cron settings which i still struggle with but to be fair there is a cron manual - i just dont seem to get on with cron in general so thats not a criticism of akeeba
its not very often i pay for jonla extensions but this one is worth it
It was installed with Joomla-1.5.18 that is running on an Apache Server, PHP-5.2.13, MySQL-5.0.81
I installed Akeeba-3.0 after I made a new site for a friend. I ran it, and everything seemed to work fine. Then, all of a sudden, a couple of days later, I tried to do another backup, but the button to "Backup Now" was missing. Nothing new was installed in this Joomla installation after installing Akeeba. I searched the Akeeba forum for help and found other people with the same problem. I tried several of the suggested fixes, but nothing worked.
I uninstalled it and re-installed it without using FTP functionality in Joomla. I tried installing svn versions both with and without FTP functionality in Joomla (for the permissions issues); I uninstalled other plugins that possibly conflicted with this package, and nothing worked. Then finally, I gave up.
I then installed JoomlaPack-2.3.3. As always, JoomlaPack works fine.
It will be a while before I try Akeeba again.
But you never asked for support. When such an impossible problems occurs, we go as far as asking you for backend access to your site and we fix the problem. For free. Even in the free version.
Furthermore, JoomaPack 2.3.x had sevrere issues with database backup. Restoring its backups is impossible.
Being a fairly old hand I was cynical enough to check that it restored the backups on a variety of systems and the news is - it does. It performed a flawless backup of my main site and flawlessly restored it to 3 different servers on 2 different domains using 2 different server platforms.
The author should be very proud of this product and he/she has my grateful thanks.
