Install using the Joomla Extension installer, then browse to Module Manager and select Administrator page. Find the module and publish to the "icon" position.
The button will direct the user to the CiviCRM main dashboard page.

Nice. Works in 1.7, but creates a new "icon panel" with the CiviCRM icon. I'd prefer to have it inside the default box, like the picture (think that should work for 1.5).

That is unfortunately how J16+ handles module assignment to the admin icon position. However, I borrowed a nice workaround from Akeeba Backup's admin modules and implemented in v1.1. Please download and take a look.
