Edit your template and make module positions which is exacly same as the category IDs of your site. After that copy, module which type is mod_banners to each module positions what you created. Edit the modules -> select which category or banner shows in that position. ( If you don't like the Joomla's internal banner component use any other what you wish. Eg.: Flexbanner or else.)
So the final step is use the Joomla's standard Banner component (or which best for you see note above) add a banner code (Google Adsense or any) to category what you select at the mod_banner module.
This plugin for Joomla!1.5 is inserts the {loadposition #catid} by default (or what you give at the parameters panel eg.: Google Adsense, OpenX code, etc.), between introtext and fulltext.
Where #catid is the category id of the actual article.
If you don't wish to show any banner please use {noad-cr} command into the introtext.
