We went with Jobs Pro after evaluating standalone open source job solutions, Drupal, other Joomla job extensions and even SaaS providers (like resumato r.com)
In the end it came down to Jobs Pro either for Wordpress or Joomla, and we went with Joomla's implementation as we felt it was more mature.
This extension alone is easily worth the $105 (PRO version of course), and for that price, we have received fantastic and extremely helpful support that assisted greatly in the setup process.
Setup itself was simple, however we had a unique issue due to our development server's configuration
Our only issues with the extension are that we are unable to use language file overrides and conventional template overrides.
Best job solution for J!1.7 so far.
1st - MAKE SURE YOUR HOSTING COMPANY HAS OR ALLOWS ION LOADERS. I'm glad the developer has highlighted this, although if you're like me you may not have noticed it - or for less technical people not known what it involves.
I managed, somehow, to reconfigure my Mamp server correctly, but my client's hosting co 1and1.fr won't activate this. It is only available if we upgrade to a dedicated server - a bit expensive for one component. I am still trying to find a solution, but may be forced to change hosting company's for this, which can be messy - especially with a large number of email accounts reliant on the server.
2. Languages. Different language versions are possible - however you have to do the translations yourself. Over a 1000 lines of text in php files (including lots of apostrophes in French to backslash out!) is a full time job for several days. Doing it in the dark, without being certain in what context it is being used adds to the complications!
If you don't have these 2 obstacles, you will probably find it relatively straight-forward, although it is still time consuming to set up the basic functionalities.
Its true that there are alot of setting to go through and the English language file needed a little adjustment but all in all a day or two to completely integrate it and it does EVERYTHING you could ask for. Support is excellent despite my sometimes obvious questions, every query was answered quickly and with detailed "idiot proof" answers. Thanks again
For the most part this is a good extension, but it is only 3/4 complete. Yes, you will get installed eventually yes you will get it up and running and as long as you use paypal you will have no payment issues. Yes it has a ton of options but it is just like phoca it has so many options its complicated and NOT user friendly. You have to read manual after manual just to figure out how to fill in the fields.
It is a digital product purchased using paypal, which by the way offers IPN (instant payment notification) however this coder doesnt care. And after I spent $105 I had to wait almost 24 hours to get permission to download the product I purchased.
After that I needed support to change their download package because after 5 attempts and multiple browser crashes I still hadnt been able to download anything from them. I could download all i want from any other source tho. After finally getting the download to my computer I had to go tell my host to activate my IONCUBE according to Jobs support staff. Whatever that is, but my hosting compnay knew what it was and activated it.
Then I figured ok smooth sailing........NOPE
I uploaded and installed on my J1.6 backend, but the upload failed because I didnt put a key code in somewhere that was on page 80 of the manual somewhere that I finally got sick of reading. So JOBS support staff finally went in and took care of my installation after 16 hours of fighting with them.
Should be smooth sailing now right?? NOPE......
Now as I go to list my first category theres a default status that needs to be answered but when you hit the drop down menu to select something there is nothing there to select.
After another hour of reading and forum support I finally figured out how to fix that. Then it took another 2 hours of reading and forum support to get a menu button up on the site because it automatically doesnt do it. Ok I got a menu, I got a dashboard, I got it installed should be smooth sailing from now on right............
O yeah after setting up all my categories and restrictions and credit packages now lets go do one final test.
The shopping cart if you use google checkout doesnt reset its queue so when I tried to go checkout on a sample purchase it was trying to buy 7 quantities of one package because of all the "sandbox" attempts I did earlier. There is no box to uncheck or check to switch quantity. After 4 hours of forum reading and no support I finally gave up. THen I recieved this for support.
Can you please create seperate ticket for this issue? It is hard to answer 3 issues on one ticket
Thanks
Maybe if you had all the bugs worked out I wouldnt need to put multiple issues on one ticket.
Ok ok so maybe if it was just this one issue I wouldn't be writing such a negative review, but on top of this heres a real award winning bug.
When an employer creates a portal to accept applications is created. When you go back into that portal to view applications you get 3 hyperlink clickable words that bring you back to your job you posted. The only way you get to look at job applicant resume is if you click this icon that is a pencil & paper and when hover over it it says "EDIT"
so you have to click edit to view a job applicant resume.
And after much forum review and yet another ticket o by the way I have only had this download for 4 days the support I get is directions on how to go into the code and change it myself.
I am not a coder and I am not going into the code to fix a bug that shouldnt exist with a price tag of $105 upfront.
If you are not coder or programmer stay away from this component. If you are I am sure the potential for this component is limitless but for the every day user this component is horrible. It would take over a week & constant support to iron out all the bugs and get it to full functionality.
I asked for a refund 2 or 3 times after and was denied instantly everytime.
I do not recommend this to anyone.
There are two other components that are just as comparable and carry a price of $35 and $20. There is no need to spend $105 on this non functioning component.
I have already purchased 2 x licences and the developers are open to ideas on how to make this product better / more customisable.
Support for the product is great even if you are making changes / customisation that is outside of the current product scope.
This is a big component with a lot of functionality and I hope that it will continue to develop in the future.
Thank you for your support.
it has everything that a big jobsite has.
almost every field is editable and removable.
great support almost sometime in the same day.
plus many more....
but there is a but like everything in life.
in the biginning it appears very complicated if you dont have php knowladge,
after awhile you will get used to it.
over all it deserves his 5 stars
The front-end user interface is lacking also. The templates are uninspired and look rushed. Things like registration were not thought out; example: when registering (job seeker or employer) you will be required to enter your name and email address. However, after you log in for the first time you are required to enter more detailed information, including your name and email address (again). Also, if you enter your username and/or password incorrectly the module does not inform you of this; it instead just refreshes the page (no errors).
Yet another problem is the employer’s ability to see an applicants' resume and cover letter. This is way too hard, no one paying you for services will put up with it. You will often find yourself clicking links back and forth until you can find what you're looking for, only to discover you have to learn it again the next time; not user friendly (users being seekers and employers). Finally, the resume search is for the most part pointless. If I were an employer looking for a qualified candidate, why would I do a search on a resume title; wouldn't things like qualifications or years of experience be more important? I think so but these aren't options in the search. Want to search a resume for key terms? Good luck because even though Job! Pro has a text search option, it really doesn't work. I can type anything into this field but it comes up with "no resumes found" every time.
So if I have so many problems with it, why did I give it 3 out of 5? Because it does provide the recruitment basic and has a solid foundation in which I can build from. It will take me and another developer several months to bring it to the standard I require but for $105 it's given us a good starting point.
If you plan to start a job site and think you can purchase this extension and be online in a few days -- with some work, you can. But trust me when I tell you, you won't have many visitors because it just isn't user friendly or polished.
P.S. Watch out for the misspellings and grammatical problems; there are plenty of them.
Hi;
You say that you have had problems with our product but you have never contacted us.
Please use our ticket system or support forum when you have problems, We wil be happy to support you like we do for all our clients.
Support is an issue which must be done by us, Not by the JED editors
RESUME SEARCH PART
Jobs! has a custom field manager. You can add/edit/delete the resume fields. You can create unique resume search forms with zero php knowledge
You can add more fields to resume search form or you can resume fields from resume search form. (This is a result of you have never contacted us)
Let me give an example about adding "experience" field to resume search form
1. Before you start lets see the resume search form. See http://www.instantphp.com/images/stories/h.gif . There is no experience field
2. Visit "Jobs! Admin Panel>List Resume Fields" link . See http://www.instantphp.com/images/stories/h2.gif
3. Find the experience field. Select it and hit the 'Edit' button from toolbar . See http://www.instantphp.com/images/stories/h3.gif (Please also take that there is a 'New' button on toolbar)
4. When you hit the 'Edit' button, You will see http://www.instantphp.com/images/stories/h4.gif . You will see that a 'Searchable' parameter. When you select 'YES', The field will be searchable (It will be a part of resume search form)
5. Lets see the result http://www.instantphp.com/images/stories/h5.gif . Experience field will be searchable.
This part is explained on http://www.instantphp.com/documentation/question/52-custom-fields-for-resumes.html (Un-licensed users will not see the content)
APPLICATION VIEW PART
You say that application view part is hard. Employers can see their applications (cover letter, resume data, resume attachment) with 2 ways
1. You employers can see the applications on your web site
1.a) When employers visit the 'Jobs! Employer Panel', They will see http://www.instantphp.com/images/stories/h6.gif . Click on 'View your appplicants' link
1.b) Jobs! will list the applications of the employer. See http://www.instantphp.com/images/stories/h7.gif
1.c) Click on the small pencil symbol. Jobs! will show the application detail See http://www.instantphp.com/images/stories/h8.gif
2. Your employers can get their applications (cover letter, resume data, resume attachment) to their e-mails (without visiting your web site) . See http://www.instantphp.com/images/fbfiles/images/full_resume2.gif
Do you think these ways are too hard?
TEMPLATE PART
Jobs! is coming with 2 different template and 12 colour schemes. Default one is on http://www.instantphp.com/demo/jobs.html . The other one is http://www.instantphp.com/images/stories/h9.gif
http://www.instantphp.com/documentation/question/26-customizing-jobs-template.html document explains how to edit the Jobs! template. (Document content is for the licensed users)
PROFILE CREATION PART
Jobs! supports 2 ways for the profile creation.
1. With Joomla! registration: Jobs! has plugins your users to create employers/job seeker profile while they are registring to your web site. For example: greencolorearth.com is using Jobs! and using this way
2. After Joomla! registration: Your users can create employers/job seeker profile after they complete the Joomla! registration.
As we understand you have used 2th one and you are asking about the 1th method. You can change the profile creation method with a configuration part. http://www.instantphp.com/documentation/question/67-employer-and-job-seeker-registration.html document explains the profile creation method in detail
LOGIN PART
You say that Jobs! does not informs when you enter your username and/or password incorrectly the module does not inform you of this. This is totally wrong. Our product does not deals with login. Login is done with core Joomla!
Joomla! is using jdoc:element to show the messages. We mean that your Joomla! template must have element . We think that this element is missing in your global Joomla! template. You can get more information about jdoc from http://docs.joomla.org/Jdoc_statements
LAST WORD
If you need support, Please use http://www.instantphp.com/support/21-jobs-support.html or http://www.instantphp.com/tickets/. Do not use a JED comment to get support
Thanks
However, there are some things to be aware of.
First, the component is not easy to use. Be prepared to devote extensive periods of time to learning it. This is especially true if you plan to customize it (a requirement for most), as there are numerous files that make up the component that are not clearly documented.
Second, the support is phenomenal, easily the best I have seen. I often receive a reply within a couple hours, and always within a day. However, this is a double edged sword (see above point) because you will need lots of support.
Third, it does not play nice with the rest of your Joomla site. Its a self contained application with its own frontpage, and its own navigation system. This wouldn't be a bad thing, except its your only option. The only page you can create with the menu system is the home page. You can't set menu options for individual categories or control panel features. This means its almost impossible to publish modules to specific pages, you have to get really creative.
Finally, this component features FREQUENT upgrades, and they are constantly adding new features.
All in all, would recommend as long as you understand its vastly more complicated to set up than the majority of components out there.
But I think the people from instant PHP realy earned this one.
The programm is working good and they keep making it even better.
But best of all is the super fast and helpfull support.
The only I can say to the developers is to make more cool templates with pictures, and to develop a good banner management. Otherwise the product is powerful and useful - with many needed options.
I've tried many the other free job components (I do not like spending money :))
They are not good for build a job portal . After a while i've decided to give a try this commercial component
The positive side of this components
* Their support is exactly perfect. I've used their support forum more than one time. the responses were very fast and useful
* The component has many useful features and they are continuesly adding more features
There is an issue that you must consider.
* If you have too narrow joomla template, You may get problems with the component home page. That was the reason i've used their support site
when i think totaly, they deserve every penny of the money
good work instantphp
