I used it for about two months. Had a few issues during that time, but I managed to resolve them myself. But the real problem came when i changed templates to a 2011 Rocket Theme purchased template. Once I installed the theme, the chat stopped. I switched to Purity, but still didn't work.
Contacted the developer and his ONLY response is that it doesn't work with Jomsocial, which is weird because it did until I updated the chat plugins.
I get the same as most: It installs, but you can't see it in Joomla's component manager. When I uninstalled, it caused havoc! I got php errors, etc. Had to remove it manually and delete the database entry.
I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. And It's also pretty clear that the developer isn't updating it anymore. I've heard there was an update coming since January. He also rarely responds. It's most likely abandoned. What's worse is that I had just paid the monthly fee, and lost that money. Responses for refunds went unanswered. Bad support, poorly developed extension.

Some bugs were found when using some Joomla! templates, but now they are fixed in the version 3.0.
In addition, this new version is fully integrated with Jomsocial.
This chat system has a nice potential, but unfortunately it's still buggy and the support is very lacking as it takes for ever to get an answer, even thought I spent money with it.
I don't recommend it for those who need a stable working chat system (whether for Joomla or phpBB, we had problems with both), but has potential to be a great extension in the future.

despite easy installation, loading is toooo slow sometimes it takes up to a one minute, some other times does not show the online visitors, it's hosted on their server and may be their server is slow or loaded.
I upgraded to PRO version thinking that I'll have a better connection and response, but the problem remains the same,

Bowob servers are designed to support thousands of users and to scale seamlessly with negligible latency.
So the problem here could be that you were using a far away server.
I followed all the instructions word for word but coudn't get this component to work. I even tried contact Bowob vi their own chat box on their own website and got no reply. I think it is a con. What is even worst is that you have to pay a monthly fee and not just a one off payment. And everything you chat about goes through their servers.
I have tried twice to install this component with its corresponding modules and plugins with no success. The component does not show in admin area, and the module doesnt show up in the front-end.

All in all i was left a bit disappointed with this, exactly what i'm looking for however the cons outweigh the benefits. 1st problem you get a component, 2 modules and a plugin i can access everything but the component, it doesn't display once installed so i have no idea what kind of options i could have had, can access the modules and plugin but cannot see or access the component unless looking at it through ftp which isn't helpful.
My other griefs with this is i don't want this on my whole site just a chat section of my site, but you have no option of this. Once you install it, it's everywhere on every page which just looks ugly seeing it on every page would look nicer if you could select sections to have it display. And thirdly once it's installed and running smoothly if someone is accessing you're site they will get an annoying redirect to the same page (refresh) which i never noticed on the demo but sure as hell noticed once i installed it. So i guess i'm being generous with a 2 star vote :(

Recently released version 3.0 solves some of your "cons":
- Now the extension is only one plugin, so it is much easier to install.
- No "page refresh".
i tried to install this to use and after having problems I received very good support straight away. However, I was told there was a problem with the "mod_security" and that is why it doesn't work with my site and the developer promised to come back with a fix. This was nearly 3 weeks ago now and after repeated emails to ask if a fix is available, I have heard nothing. It is a shame because this chat feature looks great and I would love to have had a chance to try it.
Unfortunately when I try installing it again, I get an error and my whole site crashes when I try logging in to use the chat. Takes me forever to get my site back.

Fixed! New version 3.0 uses a new loader script that removes any problem with mod_security.
I used to have AJAX Shoutbox but my site kept getting shutdown because of it. So far this Chat has not given me any problems. I love it so far!
You are able to add Admins for the Chat, multiple windows for private or public chat. You can also ban members, IP addresses and you can also edit the sounds and template (theme) to blend in with your site.
