Version 1.6 is now compatible with Joomla! 2.5. Note that there are different files for Joomla! 1.5 and 2.5.
I'm using this shoutbox for either a 1.5 installation AND a 2.5 installation and both versions work well for me.
There's not really a documentation available, so for some issues you have to crawl the different files within the module folder - that's the reason for "only" 4 stars. But hey, it's free and it works!

This extension has very poor programming, almost no styling and awful support. A lot of bugs, some of which weren't fixed even a year after report. I'm glad I became a better programmer myself since, so I fixed those bugs. But this is not a good sign for initial developer.
Hi i have language Translation lang_front ini to danish but can get it to work in joomla 2.5 i put it in the folder language/da-DK, what i do wrong ? can sombody help me, have format to utf-8 wit out bom.. will translate the last 2 ini file befor i no i will work the first one.
I am trying to uninstall the module however it does not show up under Extension Manager, Modules. It shows that the coding is third rate at least. A good idea, terrible implementation.
It is very customizable if you understand css and php. This module has great potential if it was developed further. But i did noticed some errors. The profile link to the Kunena forum profile won't work. You have to edit a line in helper.php to get it to work. But besides that it is a pretty simple shoutbox. Works great for the features it has.
Been a user of this shoutbox for almost 2 years now and had nothing but great experiences. Bought the pro version and had some issues updating to the latest version, the developer promptly provided help and even installed the latest version the site for me! Great product, great support.

But the problem for me is the links that users post on the chat, are followed by google. They dont have the attribute "nofollow", so it gets a lot of spam.

The free version works well but you'll eventually get lots of spam. I used it on our wedding website that has not been intentionally indexed by Google and is not advertised anywhere. It's a low traffic site with trafic just form the wedding guests but after a few weeks it still got SPAM on it. It was working fine up to this point so I deided to install the PRO version so I could use its CAPTCHA features. I uninstalled the free module and installed the PRO version. The captcha doesn't work as the CAPTCHA box disappears after you hit submit and no messages could be posted as a guest. The avatars show up as balnk even when you turn off avatars. I'm an experienced web developer and I believe I've configured the module correctly. I usually write positive reviews but was very disappointed with the PRO verison. I wouldn't recommend you buy this extension. Use the free on e if you can get away without the spamming.

It works flawlessly, IF you set it up correctly. I've been using it for a couple of years now, and the only problem I have had is remembering NOT to install the mod that comes in the package. I'm running Joomla 1.5 in legacy mode, with a 1.0 template. There is a second mod that is separate from the one in the package that works perfectly for me with this configuration.
I noticed a complaint about getting spam with this shoutbox. I don't get any spam in mine. It's not that hard to configure your settings to prevent this:
You can set the module to be publically viewed, but restrict the shouts to registered users. That's the first step.
Next, even if you don't want to use it, I recommend installing Community Builder along with the CBRecaptcha plugin (set to appear on BOTH the registration page AND the login reminder page.
I used to have spam problems. Now that I'm using CB and Recaptcha, even with the shoutbox set to be viewed by guests, I don't get ANY spam anymore.
Use Recaptcha and restrict any posting areas of your site to registered users, and the spam will virtually disappear.

This would be a really great extension if there was some way to block and keep the spammers off of it. Maybe if it was better set up, I don't know - I don't even think the "Captcha" on it works. I'm going to hate doing it, but I need to disable it; because I'm baby sitting it daily. The last straw, today, I woke to find an actual "Porn" animation going on it... I was horrified... it has to go.
Good module, but full of spam, hack my site!
