A great piece of work and you always get personal help from Phil if you need it.
I have bought three different components from Blue Flame (several of each) for use across three different sites. All good.
Thanks Phil, I hope more and more developers make such outstanding products - they are worth it even with the price attached.
I've looked at all the usual suspects for form creation and been sorely disappointed by many of them. This one however is different – it works!
I did have a small installation issue which turned out to be the fault of my host rather than with Joomla Forms. However, before I discovered the real culprit, I contacted support for Joomla Forms and received some fairly immediate helpful suggestions as to how to fix the problem.
After moving to a more helpful host, the installation and set up of Joomla Forms went smoothly and without a hitch. I had my first form created and working within ten minutes.
For anyone buying this, please take time to view the really helpful videos Phil has posted on his website. These walk you through the process of creating your first form and was the clincher for me buying this. I wish more developers did this.
I did find a small conflict issue with the use of JCE Editor 1.5.1 in conjunction with Joomla Forms. On contacting Phil, I'm assured that this is being corrected and I look forward the update which incidentally I am assured will be free as are future updates once you have bought the product.
Thanks for a great product.
Jon
I had one issue on redirecting after submitting. I emailed Phil and got an immediate response. It was actually a very easy process that I just overlooked.
Support was very quick and the problem was actually mine not the programs.
If you need any forms on your site, it is well worth the small investment Phil asks for. It will save you that much in time the first time you use it.
Heck, for what I needed to do I could have most likely done within Joomla template coding, but I figured it would take at least 30 minutes to figure it out and your program made it simple and gave me future capabilities! Cheaper than my time....Made it a "No Brainer"!
It's like the record business...at US$15 people download the albums, make the tracks $0.99 and people think nothing of coughing it up, yes?
Keep up the good work and I wish you luck with your pricing experiments!
Thanks
I did have some issues initially with getting the email working since my host puts extra restrictions on SMTP mail but after commenting out the SMTP authentication all worked well. I'm glad I could get it all working as this extension is a joy to use.
I used to build with frontpage (I am so old) and php formbuilder but since I've been on joomla have been struggling with forms
But not with your joomla forms Phil!
Built this form below in a matter of minutes - great stuff! And trust me - phpFormbuilder or FrontPage were nowhere near as easy as this was.
Thanks again
Dennis
Two little extras would be nice:
1) different options for how required fields are displayed, the red stars aren't massive eye-candy and it doesn't say on the form what these mean
2) a plugin so a form could be displayed anywhere in an article.
Thanks Phil!
Dave.
Hi Dave, thanks for taking the time to leave a review - I have some GOOD NEWS for you! in reply to your points. 1) I agree, I hate the validation error messages - and I cant decide how it should be - so for the next version I have made it 100% configurable, that right, you will soon be able to display the validation error message any way you like! 2) We have blogged about this, its the #1 requested feature at the moment, 80% of the code has been written to allow forms in content and this is the main new feature for the next release (Feb 2009)
Same remark as the previews reviewer, I took me some time to figure out that you could have multiple actions executed after a form was submitted. I finally figured it out by checking out the demo server and the 3 forms available there.
My only tiny caveat is that it isn't immediately obvious how it all works together and I would have given up if I didn't "feel" that it was a winner. Setting up the form is easy enough and there's lots of flexibility. However, I got a bit stuck when it came to the last bit, namely Submit Actions. Senior moment perhaps but I didn't realise (and nowhere in the FAQs does it mention) that you can set up any or all the available functions. Indeed you must! The trick is to make sure that the last one in the list is Redirect and you'll find it works like a dream. Just don't give up if you don't quite get the concept at first - it really does work superbly!
Thanks for your feedback. Its important I think to point out that users DONT have to use the "redirect plugin" after the submission if they dont want to, you can simply add the "HTML (Thankyou)" plugin and display a thankyou message (or other HMTL Text) on the landing page :-) :-)
I did not have any of the installation issues some other people had, the product worked right out of the box. A comprenensive user manual would be a great addition or a few more videos, but the absence of these do not diminish my high opinion of this product.
Highly recommended.
This one though I have to say is almost perfect. Intuitive, easy to use with an excellent array of options and appended explanations make this tool very easy to get to grips with.
The only imperfection is the inability to add a form into a module…. however I noted on Phil's website a soon to be released update will tackle this issue.
I created my first form in no time at all. If programming isn't your forte or you’re just short on time then I would have to recommend you give this a whirl. You’ll look like a superstar to your clients.
The support is faultless; I received a response to my query in just over an hour.
Best investment I've made on any Joomla extension to date!
Easy to install and get going, couldn't be simpler to do your first form.
But beyond that there's so much depth, ability to customise emails, multiple (non-captcha) spambot checks, simple to add Submit Actions...etc
There's options to edit the CSS/HTML/Javascript, go as deep as you like.
Only thing on my wish list would be a wysiwyg layout editor, like the old Facile Forms, where you can nudge the fields into the pixel-perfect position.
However there IS a Custom Smarty Template which I havn't tried out yet so possibly that would help alter the layout.
Good support too, Phil responded quickly (allowing for time zone differences) and helpfully.
The only thing that I would have liked to see (perhaps for a future version) is the ability to specify which events I want to respond to using JavaScript. It should probably be done so that we can click on a "New" link to add more scriptlets to a field. Then, at runtime, you just spin through all of the scriptlets/events and pop them into the input field tag. Currently, it looks like you only support ONBLUR. However, if I want to do something other (like ONCLICK), can't be done (at least I can't see anyway of doing it), other than with JavaScript injection at runtime to add events to the fields at runtime (not very pretty or elegant).
Also, I thought that a few more predefined types would also be helpful, like a Telephone Type with automatic validation. This is very typically used in websites and would be very useful. The date picker/entry type needs a little tuning as well. It should force you into the format that you enter and should allow anything other than numerical digits. It should automatically place the slashes "/" and colons ":" move the cursor into the right spot for the next digit. Social security numbers should automatically add the dashes "-" as well and not allow us to enter them. The number of equal-digits should automatically be set for the predefined fields like these. There should also be a predefined type for federal numbers, which are the same amount of digits as SS#, but have different placement for the dashes (only using one dash, instead of 2).
Another thing I would like to see in a future version is the use of Fieldsets for grouping fields onscreen. The inclusion of this one feature would have made it easier for my forms, and would not have required that I use Smarty Templates.
Regardless, of these missing features, I still thought that this form generation product was easy to install, easy to use, and easy to learn. After a few hours of working with it, I feel comfortable of saying that I've mastered all of its basic features and am working my way through the advanced features, such as redirects for an Action (awesome that they added this).
