HecMailing
You can create many groups from backend. A group can contain joomla user, joomla group or other e-mail address.
This component use default editor and is able to send images (remote image or embedded image) and have a template system.
You have also a contact management with new captcha (reCaptcha) which allow your users to send mail to spécific group.
NEW : Version 1.7.0, in test is joomla 1.6+ compliant...

When sending email you have choice to select default sender but I have been unable to define or change this. I think I may have set this up originally at install??

In this version, there are some bugs, translation missing and contact module isn't et finished yet.
But I'm working on a new version with bug less (I Hope ;) ) and some others features (new captcha for contact, new dialog for backend...more parameters...). I tried to listen users and add features they are waiting for.

You're right, make possible to import an e-mail list can be usefull.
For translation, if you have a good translation file you can give it me, if you want, and I will add it to my setup (with credit for you ;) ). Help is welcome, because my english is bad!!!

HecMailing promissed to be a usefull extension for creating mailing lists.
The first thing I noticed was the French and English language mixed up in this extension.
Secondly when i try to add a new contact it shows a notification that I have to select one !! So it seems not te bee possible to create a new contact.
Further I wonder what the templates section is meant for, the only thing you can do there is to remove one, though there are no templates for hecmailing installed!!
I hope the builder of this extension will solve this kind of problems first, instead of spending time in creating a language pack for this extension.
I think when this kind of problems are solved Hecmailing might be a good product.

For the Contact problem : I made a mistake when I create Package, I forget to remove Contact module. Contact module is in Development status not for release and the backend not finished yet. But I'm working on it and if you like this functionnality, I will try to work faster ;)
For templates, maybe later ;)
For Language, I'm working on it.

Just what I want for my basic users. A simple way to group users and email them.
Still a lot of French in the screens, but you can make out most of it.
However, if I make a mailing group called Admin and include the J groups administrator and super admin it does not send mail to the super admin. (The only user on my demo) Am I using this correctly? If I put the superadmin in as an individual it works fine.
The view called Contact throws quite a few php errors on my machine.

For language problem, I'm working on it, but if anyone see language mistake (french text in english language or bad english), you can use SUPPORT button and post in my Help forum.
When I want to send mail to admin, I put admin user in the group. But I will see why if you use Admin ou Super Admin group mail will not be sent!

My J1.5 was installed in a subfolder to www root, then I noticed that the "browse host" dialog can't show me the files of my host at frontend. It just show me a blank dialog window.
Second, the backend language file is bad, many language Keys in that INI file is NOT uppercase so I had to convert them manually.
Third, some language Keys was NOT included in the language file, so I can't make a complete translation.
Forth, there is NO real CAPTCHA engine in this component, it just randomly use some pre-defined images which contains words on them. This is very bad because such a CAPTCHA can be easily guessed by spam-bots.
Hope the author will improve it soon.

Thanks for testing my component.
1. For browse host problem
My test website is also in a subfolder and it's ok. It working also in my production websites (with and without subfolders). It may have another problem (webservice file missing in install, bad parameter...). I will check it.
2&3. Backend language file
This version is in beta yet and backend resource file may have some missing keys. But I will try to check it as soon as possible. If you have the list of missing keys it will be faster to correct it.
4 Captcha
Yes, I know this captcha is not very strong. But "Contact" is a new functionality (Alpha) and I want to know if this will be usefull before to make a stronger CAPTCHA (or remove "Contact" functionnality). But If you know a good, strong and easy CAPTCHA I may include it in my component!
