Vemod News Mailer is an automated newsletter compilation and sending utility, it is NOT meant to be a "send on demand" utility (although that is possible, too.).
There is also an BETA archive/subscription module available to allow site visitors to view archived newsletters.
NOTE: Vemod is BACK with a new corporate sponsor and has resumed ACTIVE development--along with a continued full commitment to GPL and open source!
Vemod News Mailer 1.2.13 is almost complete. The truncation bug has been fixed and we added a new click tracking facility to see which articles get the highest click-through rates (on the "read more" links.
We tried several newsletter extensions and decided on Vemod. It has a straightforward and powerful concept: aggregate new articles from your site into an auto-generated newsletter. This is very different from a custom written newsletter. We really like the Vemod approach because it puts the focus on the website content so there is no separate newsletter writing and editing, which simplifies keeping the website and newsletter fresh. There are many options to config which article sections and categories feed the newsletter and how often it is produced (daily, weekly, monthly, etc).
There are a few cadillac features missing, at least we haven't found how to config them: When each article section/category is a separate newsletter that allows users to pick and choose which to subscribe to, but the Vemod engine sends each one separately to each user. There is a "single email" option but that forces users to take the entire bundle of sections and categories. We would really like the Vemod engine to bundle the users choices regards how few or many are selected.
Strongly recommend this module.

We are using Vemod News Mailer for some time on our Joomla 1.0 site. I have been (and still are) impressed with the usability and effectiveness of this component. Since we are planning to migrate to 1.5 or 1.6 in the near future, we are glad that support is continued at least for 1.5.

... GPL'ed news mailer with all these features, working out of the box! It is a little bit complicated and needs quite an effort to set it up, but I'm really greatful for this extension, that runs perfectly well on both of my joomla websites. Don't know about support, cause I never needed it. Btw, I'm happy that you found a new sponsor - keep going! Thanks!
I use this extension for a Public Health District website and it works great!! I'm constantly adding the latest health news to our site and I've configured the extension to automatically compile all the newly added content into one nice, neat newsletter and mail it out weekly! I can easily customize the appearance of the newsletter from the Joomla backend and even include modules from my site. So by using the modules not only do I include the latest added content since the last time the newsletter was compiled but I also include the headlines of previous news articles and the latest Job Listings from JobGrok as well. It works flawlessly and my list of subscribers is always actively growing especially since Vemod gives you the ability to offer guest subscriptions!

Use MVC...last I checked the code was quite impossible to look through to try to decipher anything, change the name...what exactly is a "Vemod"? How does that name convey to users that this is a newsletter component? Last but not least...how do I get involved with the development of this bad boy? I love it! Cron didn't work for me...followed directions to a T...
Richly featured component which will automatically pull content from selected sections and categories, and compile it into a single newsletter, or can send them separately. Utilizes the Joomla! builtin features for intro text and read more... links to keep the overall size of the email reasonable, and also bring visitors to your site.
great component but never worked out of the box. poor support.

Can you explain what you mean by "never worked out of the box" since no one else is reporting issues at this time? Also, please be aware that we are the new project managers and are making every effort to be as active and supportive as possible.
