AddToAny Plugin

Updated - Version 1.5 - February 1, 2010

Added two new button options that show facebook and twitter icons

Updated - Version 1.4 - October 24, 2009

Added options to only have AddToAny button appear when user clicks it, rather than always when it is hovered

Added background color option for pop-up list

Fixed bug with css

Removed extraneous ; from href that was causing validation error

Remove uppercase characters in html tags for w3c compliance

Updated - Version 1.3 - July 24, 2009

Bug fix that was in some cases not honoring the exclude section and category inheritance. For example, if you exclude a section id, no article within that section should display the button.

Updated - Version 1.2 - June 15, 2009

Bug Fix:

Found a bug that was preventing the embedded stylesheet from working properly. Specifically, in version 1.1, you would see this in the stylesheet:

* .a2a_dd img {border;0′ }

That single quote after the 0 meant in most browsers the following styles would be ignored. Thus, if you tried to apply your own styling to the addtoany button, chances are it would not work. So the only change to 1.2 is to remove that single quote. If you've made custom changes to 1.1 yourself, you can find fix it yourself on line 30 of AddToAny.php.

-----------

Updated - Version 1.1
New Features:

Bookmarking button opens in a new window
Added multi-language support framework for translation to other languages
All images are included with plugin for faster display
Configurable options for pop-up button colors
Optionally display or exclude button in category or section pages by id
Optionally exclude button from specific articles by id
Optionally display or exclude button on front page
Optionally display or exclude button in article intro sections
Fixed a problem where page title was not always being labeled correctly
Added optional custom css
Changes for XHTML compliance

---------------------

Plugin that adds a single image for all social networking sites (digg, reddit, facebook, deli.cio.us, stumbleupon, etc.). The button is automatically updated and maintained by addtoany.com, so you can use a single button instead of trying to update and maintain many buttons for the latest social bookmarking craze (see their site for a button demo). It looks cleaner on your site to have just one button and you can choose to have it displayed before or after page content. Plugin includes the option to use one of several pre-defined buttons, or you can use your own image or text for the link.

After days of trying out a sea of share plugins, I think I'm settling with this one. I love that I can use my own image instead of the default ones, and that I can easily apply my own css styling to it without having to hack its core file.

The only thing missing is a facebook "like" button, but that's a complaint for Add To Any. This plugin, as far as plugins go, is great. No complaints!

This was once a great plugin, but has now become spyware which automatically sends data to google-analytics, without the knowledge of the website owner. It took us a while to find out where the google analytics cookies were coming from. We'll be looking for a similar extension/plugin, but will not be using this again.
Owner's reply

The integration with Google Analytics is a feature of addtoany, not the Joomla plugin itself. In other words, if you created your own Joomla plugin that used addtoany, it would also send data to analytics. See http://www.addtoany.com/ext/google_analytics/ for more info.

I have spoken with the addtoany developer and they are going to consider an option to turn off analytics in an upcoming release. If that happens, I will create an updated version of the plugin with that as a toggle option as well.

This little plugin does everything but create article PDFs (and it may do that but I just haven't found the right button!). You can exclude it from certain sections, all sections, same with categories, place the button before or after articles, modify the CSS for it's placement (I turned it on), and more. It lets you retweet an article you like, bookmark, etc... The developer really took pains to address the shortcomings of the other items out there and I couldn't find a single thing to complain about. Well, maybe one thing: the Addtoany buttons are not very attractive. But that isn't his fault, but addtoany.com. Other than that, it's perfect. Thank you!
Owner's reply

Glad you like the plugin. You could work around the "ugly" button issue if you are good at graphics and have access to your Joomla directories. In a nutshell, pick a button that is the size you like, then note the physical file location (e.g., public_html/joomla15/plugins/content/addtoany/images/share_save_171_16.gif ). Create your own image with the same dimensions, file name, and file type, then just overwrite the existing image.

I love this plugin. It works well and does what it says however I have no idea how to get support for it...the website doesn't have an email address or contact form and although it says to post a comment to suggest improvements, there is no comment form...if the developer reads this, can you post details on how to contact you with bug fixes? Thank you.
Owner's reply

Sorry, I had turned off comments for awhile on my site due to too much spam. You can now submit comments again. Otherwise you can find my contact info in the source file of the plugin.

I like this addon and use it on my site gamestorebuilder.com, however when I run a W3C compliance test I get several errors related to this plugin.

Also when someone bookmark my frontpage it is bookmarked as gamestoebuilder.com/frontpage, I have removed the "frontpage" by using Artio JoomSEF so I would like an option to not include the "frontpage" and just have it be bookmarked as "gamestorebuilder.com"
Owner's reply

I fixed a couple of w3c validation issues in the new version, 1.4

I'm not sure how to remove the /frontpage from your bookmark. It's likely an issue/conflict with the JoomSEF plugin

It is really nice but I have to questions :

Is there a way to make it appear only on click ?
looked in the php file for the 'a2a_onclick' variable but couldn't find it.
appearing on mouse over is irritating for me.

How can I choose the icons to show in the module ?

Thanks a lot
Owner's reply

Hi-

I've added the option to make the list appear only on click in version 1.4. It's a toggle now so be default it works as before, but you can edit it in the configuration.

Right now, the plugin does not support the ability to select which icons show in the module. However, I believe the plugin automatically detects what services the client uses (e.g., Digg, Delicious, etc.) and displays those options first.

This AddToAny plugin is the best option for social bookmarking your articles because from one small button you can give your readers all, and I mean ALL, of the bookmarking sites out there and you don't have to worry about updating which ones are available since AddToAny updates them. Just plug it in and take a couple minutes to set how you want the button to appear on articles. You can place it at the top or bottom of articles and you can move its positioning via the custom css.

The plugin also allows you to exclude the button on any number of articles, categories and/or sections which is a necessary function because you will likely have pages where you don't want the button to appear. When I had a problem with the exclusions not working, the creator immediately started diagnosing the problem and fixed it so it worked on my site. Needless to say, the support is five stars as well.

Thank you for your work!

Works as advertised, it's cool looking and easy to customize.

Only problem I have: the custom CSS that you can select in the configuration backend seems to be ignored, as far as I can see, so I had to put custom html with a style attribute in the button text itself to place and color the button as I liked. This works well, but it's really not very elegant ;)

But aside from that, a really good plugin.
Owner's reply

Sorry about that. I just found and fixed a bug in the stylesheet that addresses this problem. See my notes about version 1.2 for details.

that has a few oddities. The interface is very clever. What may be an issue though is that links get directed through add2toany.com first. Gmail isn't apply my template for half the screen. What exactly is happening in the call to addtoany.com?

Outstanding job, Bill! From the 'golly shucks' sort of description you give at tonys, one might think this plugin is a yawner - WRONG! I've used several, and this one is tops. Seems like you're already out with the next improvement before the next critic gets the words out, "Hey, I was thinking..." Fantastic Bill. Thank you so much for letting us experience the benefit of your hard work and talent!

For what it is, the tool is great. I too dislike the opening in same window though. Should open into new window. Never want to direct people completely away from your site.

Also, for this to be truly great, it needs to be able to put into every page, not just blog posts. I am developing a site that serves calendars, docs and info, and user communities. These also would be great to have the option for people to bookmark!!!

Make that happen, and you will be making a great tool!
Owner's reply

Hi-

Thanks for the feedback. I just finished an update to the plugin version. I'll look into creating a module as well so you have the ability to show on non-article pages.

I like the style of hide many bookmark links behide the single button. But when clicked, it will open the link in current window. That is to say, this plugin will take visitors away from my website. This is very bad. why not open link in new window?

The second problem is, this plugin did not offer multi-language support. Though there is not too much language strings on the interface, it is better to make it multi-lingual.
Owner's reply

Hi-
Thanks for the feedback. I am working on a new version now that will address both of your concerns, plus some other features. Please check back in a few days for an updated release.
