The Joomla! Extensions Directory ™

Social Bookmarking Plugin

Note: If you are experiencing any problems with this extension, please visit our support forums at abivia.net before posting a review.

Update: Version 1.1 of this popular plugin offers even more placement options with an inline tag, direct support for LinkedIn, and custom CSS.

Why did Abivia create yet another bookmarking plugin? To give you flexibility and control.

With initial support for all AddThis parameters, the Abivia SocBook plugin lets you filter by section, category and article ID. You can include or exclude a list of each.

Control whether or not the bookmarking widgets appear on the front page or in section and category views.

Place the widget using any of the content events or at the beginning or end of article bodies.

On pages that display multiple articles, Abivia SocBook creates bookmarks for the URL of each individual article.

If the user doesn't have permission to see the full body of an article, then the widget is automatically hidden.

AND... unlike some others, this extension is Google safe. There are NO hidden back-links in the generated code. This extension does NOT insert its own advertising, EVER.

This extension requires PHP5; this description is licensed to the Joomla Extensions Directory, unauthorized reproduction is prohibited. Please report violations to Abivia dot net.

This is the first time I write a review, simply because this is an amazing plugin and it worked like a charm.
Its a shame that some people on here bring the overall score of the Plugin down because of issues they faced due to bad template coding or other reasons unrelated to the plugin.

So from me a Big Thank you and well done.
Regards

Working with a template with few positions, this plugin is just what I fas looking for. Highly customizable, I can put the share button at the bottom of the article, decide when it is shown and when not... Exactly what I needed, I registered today just to give you my feedback! :)

You cannot believe how many plugins I used before finding this one, admittedly I was looking for this specific look and functionality. Best of all installed and worked without any fuss! Wish I had found this first ... I think the image led me to believe it wasn't what I wanted .. my fault judging book by cover.
Anyhow thank you so much and best of all it has language options too.
THANK YOU!

Having used two others that didn't do the job well, I tried this and am delighted to say it is the most professional, flexible and easy to use one. Gave me huge flexibility and scope of social sites for my readers. This one truly delivers and is super easy to set up and use.
One enhancement would be a version you could add to a module with {} code or a module version.

We're on it! We have version 1.1 in the works, and it supports a {socbook} tag (and some other new features like custom CSS). Just one bug fix and a little more testing and it will be ready.

To find out when it's out, we have a release announcement mailing list, or you can follow us on Twitter (@Abivia), or via RSS from abivia.net. Or you can look for the release here.

A very nice plugin, that does exactly what I need. The only small drawback is that it currently lack support for multilingual sites (you can select only one of several languages for it), but I hope that this feature will be coming in a future version. Anyway, full points - easy to install and use and does the job!

A great (and very small) little plugin...

Does exactly what I wanted it to do!

Splendid!

If there was a way of embedding it into a component - like the excellent EventsList. I am sure there is, I will have a look...

It ext makes the job. A lot of chances for customization. You can choose the section or category where to show the "share this" link. Good one mate.

I was very disappointed upon using the extension that upon each bookmark, an advertisement window opened corresponding to the Share this widget. I do no appreciate anyone hiding his spamming code in the provided extensions with no prior warnings.

Great work, its such a loss to waste such work in spamming attempts

You seem to have this extension confused with something else. Are you sure you downloaded it from us and not some file share service? The reason why we wrote this was to get rid of some hidden back-links. Do you honestly think we'd tolerate advertising? Never!

All this extension does is facilitate the insertion of code provided by the bookmarking service. We can control the parameters to it but not what it does. If one of them is stupid enough to be inserting advertising, I'd advise you to stop using that service.

Rather than coming to JED and trashing us for something we didn't do -- for something we detest -- why don't you visit our site and ask for some support?

It works fine and give us a lot of options. I like to be able to display it at the end of article or exclude the frontpage. You would believe those should be standard options for any social bookmarking extensions... they are here!

Hi,

It should have been a good component. however, there are several issues in it:

1. I just wanted the tooltip not the entire addin screen. I tried setting use addthis to NO, but it disabled the plugin.

2.When you have video on your site, the tooltip may partially hide beneath the video.

3. I have another issue with my template: when using the plugin, it is vanishing modules at a specific module position (left).

If these issues are not relevant to you, it is a good component!

Hello tamirzzz:

1. Not quite sure what you mean here. The purpose of the extension is to drop in the AddThis popup.

2. This is a template/layout issue. We have no control over code generated by other extensions.

3. This too sounds like a template problem.

If you need support please post at http://www.abivia.net/help/forums. Although we can't help with your template, we would like to clarify what you mean when you say "just the tooltip".

Easy to install and setup - lots of options to make Addthis work the way you want. Tried some of the other plugins for Addthis - this is the one that works best.

This plugin was very easy to install and configure, and it works great. The various configuration options in the backend make it nicely customizable, and easy to adapt for your specific needs.

First of all congrats for making this awesome plugin! =)

I ended up trying every other AddThis extension around here before finally trying this one.
I constantly ran into problems with the others, partly because I run a multilingual website and partly because the other extensions simply produced errors in some browsers.

As I said the Abivia plugin is the one I settled with. However there are also some functionalities and fixes that would still make it that much better.

-The most annoying thing with bookmarks is that you have a really hard time getting them multilingual. And this plugin does not only not help you with that but actually prevents you making the bookmarks multilingual by forcing you to choose a fixed language in the parameters! Which is WORSE than the default of Addthis which simply serves you the language of your webbrowser in the popup window. What's wrong with that?

So I disabled Abivia's standard bookmarks and inserted an "original" Addthis code inside a window in the parameters of this plugin to replace the standard bookmarks of this plugin - which is a REALLY neat feature I haven't seen with any the other plugins.
(The downside of this procedure is obviously that you have to check out how to customize the original addthis code by yourself on www.addthis.com - but it is good that this plugin gives you the OPTION to do so if you wish!)

-A thing that caused me some trouble was that the bookmarks wouldn't show in the articles at first. That problem was solved however by switching the position of the plugin inside the parameters from "After Content" to "Bottom of Article Body".

-The function which is perhaps the one most people need when they look for a Joomla extension to replace their laughable original AddThis plugin is SUPERBLY solved with this plugin!
You don't want to see the Share button on your frontpage, section or category view? With this plugin you get rid of them by the push of a button! =)

-One little feature I'm missing with this plugin however is the option to add your own text directly above or below the Share button. Something like "Share this article with friends!" is encouraging people to share content so it would be really nice to see the option of adding custom text in an upcoming update!

(The plugin called "prova advanced social bookmarker" has exactly that feature but unfortunately I had various other problems with it.)
Owner's reply

Thanks for the detailed feedback! We're going to address these issues in an upcoming release, but there's currently no schedule for when that will happen.

Note that since you're using the code from AddThis, you can add text where you want and don't have to wait for an update.

Lots of parameters, it works like a charm. Only thing we'd like to see is the possibility to insert some html after/before the plugin to set alignment or introductory text like in Ultimate Social Bookmarking.

Nice piece of work!

Extremely easy to install and configure. Works exactly as promised. Have tested others and they all have quirks and things that just do not run right. Abivia Social Bookmarking Plugin does not have these quirks that I can see. I tested various options and they all worked correctly! Nicely done.

I tried ALL the social bookmarking extensions on here and this is the best by far.

Easy to exclude sections and categories (just put a minus sign before the section number), easy to configure location and appearance, and most importantly no link-back to their own website.

Great job Abivia!
