Update Manager for Joomla! Popular Component

The Update Manager for Joomla! is one of the oldest update managers around having been originally released in January 2006 for Joomla! 1.0 and previously only available as part of the Advanced Tools package. The latest update manager is now available both as part of the Advanced Tools collection or stand alone.

This update manager provides the ability for you to easily and effectively keep up to date with the latest release of Joomla!. It supports the ability to use cURL or PHP wrappers to download files with both supporting the use of proxies to handle downloads on networks where direct internet access may not be available. The tool also provides support for using FTP mode on sites with Joomla!'s 1.5 extractor or a back ported copy of the new Joomla! 1.6 extractor libraries. There is support for manually uploading packages to the site and using this local version and the extension has the ability to update itself and can be prevented from installing an update if the version of the component may not handle the update correctly.

Best of all, this extension is completely free!

Wow, this is the easiest component i have ever used. I updated from .14 to .15 in 15 secs maybe less. I was amazed, no really i was. I didn't have to make any changes i used extractor 1.6

This should be on everyone's download list. Putting these sites together can have there own challenges without upgrade problems to add. This takes that away.

Actually I faced some problems twice before and uninstalled. But today I gave a try and succeeded.
If nothing works, please follow my steps:-
In parameters, select “Joomla1.5 default extractor” and cache to “Yes”. Download method-”fopen”. (Curl too may work)
When i checked my tmp directory (permission should be 777) i found jupgrader.xml as size 0 bytes.i.e.nothing written automatically. so i copied the contents of jupgrader.xml and created a new file with unicode encoding.
After saving, upload jupgrader.xml to tmp folder.
Go to Update manager menu in joomla and proceeded to step 2. Actually I have downloaded a zip format upgrade package from 1.5.14to 15 from joomla and uploaded to tmp folder which wasn't recognized by this extension. So know, the format used by this ext should be tar.gz. Follow the link in step2 to download latest joomla patch in tar.gz format and upload it to tmp folder. Just reload the page and confirm the package..You are done!
Thanks Pasamio...
This is a great component. In the pure spirit of open source, it does one thing, and does it well. Just a question... if we should consider upgrading a locale language file as well, would be better to create a separate version of the component, or do you think it can be somehow integrated with a preference?
This is farmost one of the BEST components I have seen, it makes life so easy, Only 2 clicks and it will update your joomla to the latest release, No hassle, no code changes, Just sit back relax and it does ur job... BEST 10 out of 5/..........

This worked perfectly! The only change I had to make was to my configuration settings, it took me a minute to figure it out. I used the suggested setting and it upgraded my site with no problems.
Thank you for such a great product. I was dreading the upgrades until I found this.
It works great! I hope it becomes part of version 1.6 core, as it's being suggested by other reviewers. But there should be a little tutorial on how to update a website. I changed a setting in the Parameters before I was able to update my website (Extraction Method) The default is 1.6 Extractor, I changed it to 1.5 Default Extractor, before it worked. I believe some other people will face similar problems when updating their website. Anyway, thanks to Samuel Moffatt for this excellent component. Keep it up!!

I tried to update to 5.15 without this component and without success. The component is really simple and fast to use and it WORKS. Thank you for your help.

I'm in charge of keeping our Joomla! sites up to date and this tool really helps me out. We wrote a Version Verification Tool component to allow me to diff my files and see what is different before running this, but combined, updating my sites is sooooo much easier now. Thanks!

Did you ever dread getting the security updates because some bug or security problem had been patched?

Put it off because patching was a bit complicated and sometimes made things break?

Well not anymore! This tells you when there is an update and it's a one button press operation!

this should be made part of core if the original author will allow!

It can't get anymore simple than this. One of the easiest ways to keep your joomla site up to date. I agree with the post below. This should be included in the core of joomla 1.6. Great job and a donation will be coming your way soon.

I'm using this component and is working very well. Thank you for developing it and I advise everyone to install it.
This is a HUGE timesaver. I think the default setting is for Joomla 1.6 sites which failed on my 1.5 sites, so you need to set parameters before trying this. Since I don't use FTP, I chose the PEAR Zip/Tar method which worked perfectly! However, I didn't really notice that PARAMETERS button in the upper right before trying it the first time. It would be nice if this refreshed the page at the very end, showing that you are not on the new version.
I am a dabbler. I learn only as much as I need to about any one thing in order to accomplish what I am trying to do. So I have a good site and I am always improving it, but the real technical know-how behind what I do tends to escape me.

Because of this, just whispering the letters "FTP" are usually enough to make me break out into hives and I was seriously not looking forward to updating. When I found myself fighting a losing battle with a firewall, I came looking for an easier solution. This...surpassed my biggest hopes.

This extension gets the job done so quickly, so easily, that even dabblers and newbies alike can install the component and upgrade in less time than it takes to heat up a kettle. I cannot believe how fast and easy this was--instructions at the beginning let me know what I was in for, then it went through it step by step--doing ALL the work for me!

At no point was I confused or worried about what was happening. I can not recommend this extension highly enough. You guys have seriously saved me a big headache. Thank you.

Sorry about my bad English, but I just want to let other Joomla users know that this extension is a great tool for updating to the lastest Joomla version. Thanks tho the guys that have put effort on this component.

This does EXACTLY what it says and without any of the usual bells and whistles you never use!

Previously I was forced to download the update, use FTP, then install an unarchive component, etc. Then I would unarchive the update, cross everything and hope for the best. Admittedly some of this was due to Hosting provider issues.

But with Sam's Joomla! Update Manager it takes seconds rather than half an hour or more.

Go Aussie software, Go!

Thank you so much to the programmer of this extension I was becoming crazy trying to update from J1.5.9 to J1.5.14 and thanks to this extension I was able to update my site in less than 15 seconds the only thing I have to complain about is that this kind of extensions should be more notable in the ocean of information that is available for Joomla,

Believe me I was in a heart attack position just 2 days a go, thanks God I got calm down and find this extension, which it should be installed by default in the system in Joomla.
