Looks fantastic - and would be if it worked with 1.5.11 Joomla and SEF404 - latest version.
Limited documentation.
Despite several attempts to get a resolution the support seems to be lacking on the forum - more questions than answers.
Excellent for the concept - Poor for the assistance.
...what a 'missed' opportunity
Have uninstalled.

The AlphaContent component provides just what my client required: a way for visitors to access a fairly large alphabetical database of schools. The component is easy to install and configure. Then you need to set up menus of type AlphaContent, which was also easy to do.
The searching and ordering options are also excellent, e.g. to search by keyword or content, or to order (ascending or descending) by title, date created, visitor rating, and more.

I'll be honest. At first there were a few things I didn't like about this component out of the box but that was like 2 updates ago and I have seen steady progress and fixes from the author. Also, if you just learn a bit about joomla extensions (where the css files are, how to make small changes and protect them from being overwritten in an update) you can customize this very easily. Is it perfect? No, hardly any of the free joomla extensions are. You have to bring something to the table and integrate the extension for your site. And if you still find it wanting, it's up to you to make your own or pay for a custom component. This component makes a directory for you (like it says on the box) and you can take it from there. I'm using it on five 1.5.9 sites with the legacy plugin and have only had minor formatting complaints (mostly in the modules, not the core directory). YMMV but it's working great for me. Great alternative to expensive extensions where you get to pay money AND not get exactly what you want/have to modify the extension (no 2 sites are identical). ;)
It is so easy to use. The big +++: you can create easily as many directories as you want, a good way to add sub categories,( because you can only have 3 levels of sub-cat for each directory you create.)
It works directly with the joomla content system. Articles become listings on the alpha component page, but they are still articles and easy to use in other form of display, in a blog etc... this flexibility makes it perfect for my site.
Little tip though. The com will display the articles in your trash can. Make sure to clean up before publishing. Also when you enter the Cat or Sec ID in the com page, make sure not to end with a comma...
Awesome component. Works like a charm...

I'd love to rate this higher, as it has a pretty solid framework and seems to do a lot of things well - but it's the little things that it doesn't do right at all that cause the biggest headaches - like disabling/assigning the Ajax star rating - seems pretty straightforward, but alas, it just doesn't work.
The forums are a sea of questions, with precious little in the way of answers - mostly provided by other, equally frustrated users who have found workarounds for this components faulty "feature" set.
The author needs to open the code to the masses to work on, and support properly, otherwise it needs to be scrapped.

Great component. It does add value to the existing Joomla core with Social Bookmarking (share this) and allowing user friendly views for any specific Section of your site.
It works perfect with Joomla 1.5.x. This component will make you so happy that you will really feel guilty not donating money to the developer... I did so but I wish the Euro was so strong against the US$.
My only wish list would be to do a straight integration to ShareThis.com (include a user account #), this would allow any webmaster to really track how many users are social-book-marking their website.

Just want to drop a quick comment to say how well put together this extension is works perfect and does the job great.
thanks a lot.
thanks a lot.
I was just looking for something to quickly sort all the articles in a section (regardless of category label) alphabetically, and AlphaContent did this brilliantly. The install was easy, with no hassles whatsoever, and it's simple to set things up just how I want. I already am finding that I prefer the AlphaContent blog layouts and listings to the standard Joomla options, and the Ajax rating system works flawlessly... thanks for a great product!
This module this just as promised and more. It installed without issue and was very intuitive to configure in the backend. I had what I needed and was setup from start to finish in less then 10 min. It provided the professional directory my client needed.
Thanks for the great work.

Well, I used alphacontent with my previous joomla 1.0.15 installs and when I went on using the 1.5 version, I needed a similar component. This alphapcontent 4.0.0 was just what the doctor ordered. A great component, with great support. When I had a little trouble with article-titles starting with a number, the author brought a solution within 12 hours, and that for a completely free component,...
now I'm waiting for the next version which supports special characters in titles, and then it will be truly perfect.
thanks bernard for this much needed plugin.
