I'm using Joomla 2.5.4 and have worked damm hard building my site for the last 2 months! I need an FAQ so i decided to look on here to find one...
I came across this FAQ it looked interesting so i followed instructions and installed it... the plugin and the core plugin...
I activated both ...and as soon as it was activated! ...i F5 refreshed my home page and EVERYTHING was messed up! ...
I uninstalled the plugin! and the site is STILL MESSED UP! ... this is a WORST NIGHTMARE for a developer! as there is nothing on their website explaining that this can happen!
I ADVISE EVERYONE STRONGLY to keep away!!! DO NOT INSTALL THIS PLUGIN OR YOU RISK MESSING UP YOUR SITE! ...DON'T BELIEVE ME??? THEN GO RIGHT AHEAD AND TRY IT!

I love this extension. I started using it a few years back and the process explained below got me going. I notice that the extension writer has added some functionality to help clarify that issue. =) Now I use it in several projects and it tickles my clients to no end!
if you are looking for a simple for non techies to use, i would suggest this extension. Some may experience some issues up front but once you install AND enable both plugins, the path is clear.

I never got to use this plugin, After installing it, I had to spend half a day trying to fix my site. I couldn't login as a super-admin. Joomla said: "You do not have access to the administrator section of this site". Finally I went into cPanel>PHPmyAdmin>Joomla_Database>#_user_usergroup_map> and set my user from 8(superadmin) to 7(admin). Then I was able to uninstall the component and everything worked fine.

I'm sorry about your situation but this plugin does not affect the database at all.
Except the #__extensions table but this table is controlled by default by Joomla! installation process.
I tried out this plugin and unfortunately it looks pretty limited for my uses.
First, I did have to follow the instructions below (thank you!) to get it working. The documentation on the site is lacking.
But the major issue is that the length of the question is limited by the number of characters in the title of an article. I wanted a FAQ that read "I clicked the download button and I see the thank you page, but no download started. What happened?" Unfortunately that is too long for a standard Joomla title name so it wouldn't work.
I have tried Accordion FAQ and that works much better.

I have previously used this extension to a site with J1.5 and every thing went smooth. Now I hoped to do same thing with a site with J1.6 and honestly the plugin does not work at all, it gives some error message that seems can be fixed by modifying PhpAdmin file from back-end this is not the way a pluging should work, furthermore some posts dates 2 months and 2 weeks ago, which means that the same problem have been found and yet not solved.
If I would rate J1.5.x I would rate it 5 stars, this one 1 stars. Sorry guy do not spread plugins in the Internet wasting other people time.

Core Design FAQ plugin is compatible with Joomla! 1.6

I knew i had this extension working by the past but i forgot how i got it to work. Thanks to you RobbieF who mentionned some important lacking informations on how to setup this plugin.
The author should really considerate updating his guide. I've spent many hours to try to make it works.
The only thing i'd add in your walkthrough is to put the article containing the categories in a separate category otherwise, you'll get a faq for your article contained in the faqs.

What an exceptional plugin. I really love the look of it once it's up and running.
While it has the accordion effect, I find this one is less intrusive than some of the other accordion FAQ systems I've tried for Joomla.
The installation steps (setting up the categories) is a little convoluted on the developers' site, and the forum attempts to answer the simple questions about installation but the English is not clear, so I had a bit of trouble at first getting it going.
So, here's my step by step to help the next guy:
1) Install the "Core Design Scriptegrator" plugin first, which is required, and available on their site.
2) Activate that plugin if necessary. Leave the settings as is for now, because if you need to change anything, the plugin will tell you in the front-end.
3) Install the Core Design FAQ plugin.
4) Activate that plugin. Again, leave the settings as is, you can change them later (to show the category title, etc).
5) In Joomla's Section Manager, add a new section and call it "Frequently Asked Questions".
6) In Joomla's Category Manager, add a new category and call it "General" - this will be our "General" FAQ category. Make sure you place it in the "Frequently Asked Questions" section in the drop down.
7) Save the category and look to the right under the "ID" column (in Category Manager) and make a mental note of the number listed for the category you just created.
8) In Joomla's Article Manager, create a new article called "Frequently Asked Questions".
9) This article will be empty _except_ you need to add this text: {faq category="X"} where X is the number of the ID you made note of. If the ID was 5, you'll add {faq category="5"} Note: Once you're using more than one category, you will not add a second {faq ... instead, you can comma-separate the items. So, if you have Category ID 5, and Category ID 6, you'll have {faq category="5,6"}
10) Create a new article in Joomla's Article Manager (your first FAQ) and put it in the Frequently Asked Questions section and the "General" category.
11) Make sure the "Begin Publishing" date is in the past, the article is set to "Published", and press Save.
12) Create a new "Article View" menu item on your menu and point it to your "Frequently Asked Questions" article (the one which contains {faq).

Easy to use and works exactly as expected.
1. Make a new K2 content module and pick the items or categories to power the FAQ.
2. Install and enable the 2 plugins from Core Design
3. Include this in your article {faq moduleid="XX"} where XX is the K2 content module ID
Beautiful templates (uses jQuery UI ThemeRoller)
Even works in evil IE6!
