Why a core hack instead of a separate component? The modification concerns only 3 files of the original component and this is - in my opinion - no reason to reinvent the complete component. In addition - this way allows to go on using the already existent links and takes just a few clicks to install/uninstall.
Features:
- replaces the icons of the weblinks with thumbshots
- free to choose thumbshot provider
A great component, simple to setup and does exactly what it says.
Does exactly what it says. Simple to install and enable. Instantly makes Web Links page look way better! Props to the developer(s).
Easy to install! Love how you simply enable it and if you want to disable it, it replaces the original files. Superb architecture. Integrating this with PageGlimpse.com is brilliant.
Thanks for this extension!

This is a welcome addon - big thanks to the programmer!
I found pageglimpse.com to be really slow and so I get a better service from thumbalizr.com (based in germany) and my code reads: http://api.thumbalizr.com/?url=#URL#&width=200&api_key=12345.
One problem is that the Thumbshot width parameter seems to do nothing for me and I will have to hack the code to get the thumb floating to the left of the text in frontend. hey-ho.

Nice work! I was a lil stumbled on how to get the thing working, so gonna put a couple comments here to help others.
I agree with jasin, pageglimpse.com is the way to go. First ya have to sign up for a dev key there which takes just a minute. Then in the standard Weblink component under 'Parameters', make sure your code reads like this under 'Thumbshot URL':
http://images.pageglimpse.com/v1/thumbnails?url=#URL#&size=large&devkey=123456789
and make sure under 'Icon' - ya choose 'weblink.png'
that was all i was confused about really.
Simple, turn it on and it works! I like it because it also helped quickly identify any old/broken links after seeing the thumbs.
Thanks for the nice component!
Mahalo!

Yes it is a hack, but you don't habe to be a hacker to install it.
Just install the Component and click on "activate". The Hack itself backups the needed files and then apply the changes. Easy to handle and safe.
(I tested it on Joomla 1.5.17 and 1.5.18)
There's just a small issue: Some Thumbshot-Provider (eg. Mozshot or SimpleAPI) don't support the unmasked slashes and colons (http%3A%2F%2F) won't work with this Hack. But there are lots of other providers witch support the unmasked version.

This does exactly what I was looking for. It would be nice to customize the #URL# as I was trying to host the images myself.
Anyways I went through over 12 different thumbnail sites before I found http://www.pageglimpse.com it does everything that you need it to for free, unlike all the other sites that have limits or watermarks. These two together are perfect.
Thank you

Creates a much better "look and feel" to your web links than the standard Joomla facility. So easy to install. Perhaps in future versions provide enhancements to control size the graphic images and control links via section/category. But great job anyway by the developer.
its amazing! powerful and simple!
an idea: if i can set the thumbnails width and height, that would be better.
thanks

Every few months, I go looking for extensions that will let me display weblinks the way I want to. Until today, I've been sorely disappointed. (One promising component created server errors that made my entire site inaccessible until I uninstalled it.)
"Weblinks With Thumbnails" provided a big part of what I've been looking for in under 10 minutes (and that included visiting the thumbshots.com website and installing the necessary code in the footer of my website)!
Thank you, Andreas and bretteleben.de!
