The Joomla! Extensions Directory ™

Bookmarks Reloaded Component

This extension is a fork of the popular 1.5.x extension Bookmarks by TEG Design (http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/directory-a-documentation/weblinks/162).

Making use of ShrinkTheWeb to create thumbnail snapshots of the links added, and querying popular search engines to determine pagerank information, Bookmarks Reloaded is a 2.5 native extension which makes full use of the developments including

- Category and bookmarks can be restricted to Joomla! ACL's
- Nested categories with the facility to add links to multiple categories

PLEASE NOTE:

If you require an import feature to bring in your bookmarks from TEG you will require the Pro Version. THE FREE VERSION DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY KIND OF IMPORT FACILITY.

The Free Version has a limit of 20 bookmarks which can be displayed in the front end of the website.

If you wish to use ShrinkTheWeb as a screenshot engine, you will now (since early 2012) require a basic level account, due to the fact that STW introduced a compulsory 'Preview Page Verification' feature - read more here http://www.shrinktheweb.com/content/what-stw-preview-verification.html

Downloaded the free release version 1.0 to test the software. It has been out for a while now so I thought it might be working ok, even since these negative reviews and comments. Not so.

The component installed just fine. I added a category and then a site link. Registered on ShrinkTheWeb.com to get the right codes to allow screen shot thumbnails from them in my links listings, which is what I'm looking for. Once a site link was added, I tried to confirm the site listing. I only get a revolving Java icon that never returns. Tried mutiple times from different browsers. I can see the STW account was hit and it generated the site info successfully, but the listing was never confirmed nor was the thumbnail downloaded in the component.

Furthermore, in this state, the component throws an error on the front end that causes the site to fail to load on any BookmarksReloaded page. No recourse as there is no support for the free version. Had to uninstall. Too bad this doesn't work. Please let us know when it is fixed.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, however I am rather disappointed that you have not made any attempt to contact us about your problems before you wrote a review.

We do offer support for Bookmarks Reloaded Free version - http://www.viryasoftware.com/bookmarks-reloaded-free-version-tickets - which simply requires you to create an account in order to post a ticket, so I am not sure why this was not your first port of call.

If you would be so kind as to raise a ticket, I am sure we can look at the problem you are reporting and fix it for you relatively quickly, all you need to do is submit a support ticket on the link above.

I look forward to receiving your ticket so that we can fix this bug going forward.

Kind regards,

The description for this extension is misleading. The listing of an import facility, even if suffixed by (Pro Version) will lead many people to think that a TEG Bookmarks import is included. This description should be rewritten to clearly state that there is no import facility in this version - which is the one being described - the Pro Version isn't.

The second problem is the limit on the number of bookmarks the extension will support. This isn't mentioned, and nor is it mentioned on the support site. Maybe you get told only after buying a subscription? Eitherway the extension's limitations are not made clear, rather they appear to be hidden.

Time to find a replacement - great shame.

Hi there,

Thank you for your comments, we will make the listing even clearer. We already clarified the listing to explain that the import feature is not included in the free version, we had assumed (apparently wrongly) that putting (Pro Version) after the statement about an import version would ensure that people realised this was a feature of the pro version only. You can also see our responses in reviews below confirming this fact.

Our website does clearly state that the free version has a restriction to the number of listings you can have showing and the import tool is Pro only (http://www.viryasoftware.com/bookmarks-reloaded)

"We have released a free version which has some minor restrictions (no import facility and restricted number of links to display) and is not updated as frequently, and a pro version which includes everything."

Again, not really sure how much clearer it needs to be, when you visit the page to download the free version it clearly states the following:

Bookmarks Reloaded is a re-write of the popular 1.5.x component Bookmarks, featuring in-built snapshot tool, SEO information and URL validation.

This release contains several bug-fixes and has the following limitations:

20 records may be shown in the front end
No import tool

So while I acknowledge that the JED listing could be clearer, I contest your statement that it is not mentioned anywhere on the website - it is mentioned, quite clearly, on at least two places, one of which you MUST have visited to download the software. If you had posted the question on the forum we would have responded with the information requested, but I do not see any evidence of such a question.

Ultimately, we are a commercial company. We provide professional support for all our extensions and the funds we receive from the sale of our extensions (and lets face it, £30 for an extension is a small fee - if you had to write it yourself I very much doubt you could do it for that amount) goes towards improvements to our extensions and future development.

The component BookMarks (Joomla! 1.5) had a import tool.

But you write "Import facility to bring your bookmarks and categories into Bookmarks Reloaded"

It's not correct, the free version don't have. I think that if don't have the import tool, is a poor component.

The import tool is available in the Pro version only, which has been clearly explained in numerous places.

Well, maybe because this is the first version, I don't see the same properties of the original component.
Anyway, I install the component, and it give me a error in my site when I click in one of the links in the list. Uninstall it, sorry.
If the next versions, it looks like with the original component...

Thank you for taking the time to review this extension on the JED, we do appreciate all comments we receive.

Firstly, there are many settings and features which we have removed or adapted from the previous version of this extension because they were no longer required in Joomla! 1.7 which is very different to the system that Bookmarks was originally written for (originally 1.0.x and then migrated to 1.5.x).

We have also completely re-written the configuration screens to make it a much easier process for the end user, as previously many settings were unclear, cumbersome, and difficult to understand what they actually did.

Several features are now only available in the Pro version.

Secondly, if you had problems with installing the extension or any issues with features not being present, the appropriate method to raise these issues, questions and feature requests is via our support forum, and not by writing a review on the JED without requesting support first.

As you will know if you visit the forum, throughout the migration and re-write of this extension we have been taking on and acting upon feedback from people who have used Bookmarks and we are in the process of implementing many more feature requests, but our early focus has been on releasing a stable version which can be used in production sites, rather than adding every single feature that has been requested. This is not actually the first version of this extension, we have been through several alpha, beta and release candidate versions prior to this release.

We have recently made available a new release of the Pro version which fixes the installation error, and the free version should be available either this evening or tomorrow morning.

I hope this answers some of the issues you have raised, and I look forward to receiving your suggestions for the features which you need that are currently missing.
