"Pay to Download XT" displays the description for the item & a paypal "pay now" button. By clicking, the user is redirected to paypal, makes his payment and is directed back to your site and - if the transaction was correct - may download the specified file.
"Pay to Download XT" can either be integrated into Joomla! by linking (e.g. via menu item) to the component directly or by including the product into a content item using the (optional) plugin (mambot).
At first, I tried to have my paid downloadable files with Virtuemart. I figured out it was too complex for such a job.
Oli's P2DXT was a great solution, and has been working fine for more than 2 years now.
I am actually impressed to see bad reviews here.
After some time, I purchased the manual which is very cheap.
Only a stingy guy would complain about that!
Last year I went to Pro, because I found out some more features I would like and took advantage of an offer (for those who had already purchased the manual).
I totally recommend this product, because it is simple and straightforward, and has a test mode for you to test!

After installing it I ran into several problems, first I would get an error every time I'd click the menu item created for p2dxt, after I figured that out I added some items to test it out, but the items don't show up... they simply don't show up...
The installer doesn't bring any documentation... You want suport? Either:
A - go to their website ans ask a question like I did a week ago and still no solutions...
or
B - buy the manual... lol buy a manual that's a first... Launching a faulty app with no info at all and then charge for a manual...
My advice, just go for a payed solution..
Btw they also have a commercial version but I am so unimpressed with the free version that I wouldn't pay for it in a million years.

I originally used P2DXT, however, decided to upgrade to P2DXT Pro as it met more of my needs. P2DXT Pro offers email attachments with the file, email templates, and much more. It's a simple component to work with. I would suggest reading the manual though to properly set it up.
Recently, I added P2DXT Pro to my website (for the second time) as I formatted my directory and came across installation issues. However, Oli responded to questions in the forum and later we communicated via email so that he can fix some database issues. With his quick help and expertise my website is functioning again.
A simple, but great product with excellent
customer support.

This extension does exactly what it says it will do. It even sends a file to the buyer in the email along with a redirect to your purchase page.
Only downfall was having to buy the manual just to find out what paypal codes I needed, but that's my problem and the Manual (for $2) answered my question right away! :)

I installed this and it worked OK right out of the box, no problems. It did not have quite all the functionality that I required so I uninstalled it and joomla only gave me a blank front page after this?? I reinstalled the component and the site worked again.Not a big issue in terms of space occupied by the component if the download files are deleted but...
Wow - Oli has a great component here, it does what it says!!! The manual was well put together and helped facilitate a great experience with this component - also very good for passing onto clients who will eventually configure their own items to sell.

I first posted on Oli's forum for my issue, within a few hours he responded... then within 24hrs he personally helped me to test my site and then I was up and running smoothly, and my clients are as ecstatic as I am!!!

I was looking for the right extension to sell some fotos and other stuff on a website. After testing a few a stumble to Pay to Download XT, the critics seem to be quite nice so I decided to try. After download and install I was a litle puzzel with the configuration on paypal, all the rest was quite simple and with a few clicks I had 5 produtcs ready to test. But Paypal return after payment was my problem so as everything was looking as explain I decided to pay the 1,99€ for the manual. Simple and fluente explanation, a few stepd on paypal and I has able to had everything working on the website.
I have to say that for me the manual has important to get paypal side working with the extension. Any way, a great extension for selling things on joomla 1.5. Thanks.

I had some initial problems getting this to work but it was all my own errors...and incorrect settings...I messeged Oli and he got back to me immediately and helped me get it working! I paid the $2 for the manual and it was well worth it! this component does EXACTLY what it says it will....its PERFECT! Thanks OLI!
The product is exactly what I am looking for but on trying it out found problems with the Paypal configuration. Waiting for support is now up to 1 week and two days, with only one out of three requests for assistance answered. A little worrying if it was relied upon as an up and running component.

Don't know where you posted your requests, but in the p2dxt forum on joomlaXT is not a single unanswered post this year.
It simply does not work well. There are installation and other problems, both for Joomla 1.5 and 1.0. Quick support but as incompetent as the component.

I'm very happy with this Component. I am using Joomla 1.58. I played with this for 10 minutes and it looks like this is exactly what I want and need. I will tomorrow do a test in a sandbox. I will buy the manual. Yet, I have found this to be very intuitive.

I am using that component for my own download site and I can only say: Thumbs up!
After ripping my hair out over the complexity and bugs in Virtue Mart (and never getting it to work properly with downloads), and then ripping my hair out over several other 'shopping cart' options I finally realized I didn't need all those bells and whistles and problems anyhow...I only need the user to be able to choose the audio tour and pay and download it...so I finally came across this component. It's clean and easy to install, easy to figure out. Worked like a charm right away. I did find that the plugin code will conflict with some other plugin codes in the content...so for my audio files to play I had to switch to a new audio player...and I had to move the plugin down to the last space on the plugin list...but after doing that it worked find in the content.
Good component for selling downloadable goods. I recommend paying the 1 euro ( less than a dollar right now) for the guide. Oli was very quick to reply to questions. Works as it should. Not too hard to configure. Good component.

It is very easy to figure out the source directory path on the server where files are stored. Which in most cases is:
www.yoursite.com/components/com_p2dxt/data/filename.zip
so once the user download first page of the e-book (f.e.) named "page1.zip" then he can dowload the others pages till one houndred without any paying for the rest just changeing URLs in the adress line of the browser

www.yoursite.com/components/com_p2dxt/data/page3.zip
etc
isn't that stupid?
my solution is to name files the way to not beeing so easly quessed
"page_one_rt002bf3.zip"
"page_two_fjtd3334.zip"
etc

would be stupid if the component wouldn't set permissions on the files... But it does, so even if you figure out the path you would not be able to access.
