Paypal Subscriptions Pro V2.0 has been released on 28-Jan-2011
Given that I had to rebuild, I considered 1.6. I ordered from CMS Junkie got immediate responses to my emailed questions and - for the second time around - found this to be the easiest and most cost effective way to run a subscription membership program in Joomla.
Don't hesitate to buy.
Thanks.
Purchase:
The purchase of the product from cmsjunkes was quite simple. Fill out the form, make payment, they email you authorization and you sign into your cmsjunkie account. You then download the product. (downside though you can only download it 3 times so save it somewhere safe)
Installation:
Simple install just like any other component. Nothing special to configure just straight backend admin install/uninstall
Use:
Once the product is installed you visit the components tab and click paypal sub pro. In there you'll see a tab called configuration manual where its necessary to get the paypal IPN url field. Simply follow the directions in the manual to setup your paypal account.
After Paypal is setup simply establish the subscription plans you want.
When the purchase click the subscribe link they are taken to your paypal landing page. They authorize the payment and a new username and password is sent to the email address they use for paypal.... very convenient. They then use those credentials to login.
All in all a very good product.
1 downside aspect that was worked out very quickly by the developer. In the version I got you couldn't set a subscription to go on forever. It would automatically cancel the subscription the minute it was setup. So I do recommend you buy this as your payment solution but make sure to test it multiple times and if there is an issue just email the cmsjunke team they were very helpful
Paypal recently changed their way of creating recurrent subscription. The version you had was out of date and did not include the latest changes of the component. One test was enough on our side to make sure everything worked fine.
IMPORTANT!! If you are going to use this program try and not get too hung up on the sandbox feature. Paypal recently changed on their end and i've been hung up on several times today!!! (It is not even worth calling their customer service) I am VERY disappointed in paypal, for such crappy service, but this should in no way reflect on this extension!!!
Apparently many other extensions are having this same problem using the sandbox feature.
My advice, set the amount for 1 dollar and use one of your cards to test it. Then you will see how flawlessly it works and not be so frustrated with the sandbox feature.
Thanks for such a great addition to the extensions directory. It took me a LONG time to figure out you have to have a separate account to post an extension review?!?!?! Why can't I just use my forum account??? Weird!!
Good support as well, we had a problem with IPN Requests reaching our server, they helped a lot in figuring the problem out.
Good value here!
:( i wouldn't recommend this to any one.
We assure you that we respond to our customers in the shortest time. 3 emails it's something that we don't miss.
We're surprised that Joomla published such a review, it's not even close to being something constructive.
I bought subscription pro and out of frustration (with the others) bought the 40 dollar install service without trying to install myself.
Response was quick we emailed back and forth for a couple of days until it was just right they set up my subscription plans and were helpful had a few little problems that they handled promptly.
This is a very simple component (not alot of bells and whistles) That suits my needs for this site.
It only lacks one thing that I want, a coupon discount feature.
I would recommend this component where a basic subscription is needed.
Response from cms junkie was quick and professional
Once up and running the product seems to work as stated with the only current problem i have found is if you create a non-recurring one off payment passed the expiration date the user account is not deleted from Joomla! I am currently testing to see if this is the case with a recurring subscription payment. The plug-in does allow you to create a one off payment and to set a duration so not sure if this is the plug-in or a PayPal issue but everything seems to be setup and working. The test user received an e-mail and their account was automatically created in Joomla so im currently scratching my head as to why user accounts arent being deleted. It is a feature of the plugin which is stated in the developers documentation.
I have contacted the developer on a few occasions and they had been quite helpful but after a week I am still waiting for a reply about the problem where users aren't deleted past the end of their subscription period. This is holding up the website I have now finishing developing.
CMSjunkie Support:
Have you managed to have the component to delete the users ?
Nathan Thomas :
Hi there
yes i believe so.
This is what we have. Nothing else beyond this point to signal that the component is not deleting accounts.
Please unpublish this review as it not fair. We can provide emails to support the facts .
I run a community, that consists of Joomla, with Kunena message boards. I wanted new members to sign up and have to pay to create an account (Yearly membership), and each year it automatically renews via paypal.
This plugin did EXACTLY that.
I had it installed and working within 20 minutes. All you need is Joomla installed, and a paypal account.
#1. install the module/plugin, create a new menu item/page that points to the module
#2. disable registration on your site via the login module
#3. hacked my kunena message board "register" link to redirect to the PayPal Module
#4. hacked my login module, so that the register also pointed to the PayPal Pro page
#5. set up subscriptions, I did a 1 year subscription, and also a free trial that turns into one. I clicked off "recurring" so it automatically will renew the subscription (this hasn't happened yet since it's so new, but i've been told it does it)
when the user "registers" they're directed to paypal, where they login, pay the $20. paypal then sends a message back to your Joomla site, that creates an account for that user with their paypal email address, then sends that email address, the login credentials. Simple as that.
So bottom line, if you're looking for a tool to force people to pay to register for your Joomla site, this one works really well, and is really easy to use.
Features I'd like to see:
- customization of emails sent
- a better way to lay out the registration page with the subscription buttons
- reminder emails where you can set the date to send out a reminder to renew the subscription (although since mine are recurring this shouldn't matter I don't think)
Also should note the developer always returned my emails within 24 hours, despite the number of repeat and pretty obvious questions I asked. I would definitely recommend again.

Instaled without any problems.Easy to configure.
We got a positive feedback from the subscribers, they were happy that registration process doesn't require a lot data input.
Runs properly after setup.
Had couple of questions, their support team responded promptly.
I am waiting for future releases.
There is no integration with the Joomla! login system or usergroups really. In other words, if you have, for example, Remository installed and restrict downloads to Registered users, there is no way for this component to stop a person from registering and gaining access to the downloads. The only way I could do this was to restrict downloads to the "Author" usergroup and set the Subscriber group as "Author".
It has huge potential. However, as mentioned, for $39.89 USD, it's a bit pricy and really over-rated.
Price should come down or more features added.
Just my 2c.
User needs, differ from one case to another. We want to maintain a certain flexibility for a better user experience. This is why we didn't restrict users from subscribing, and this is why there are different levels of users groups.
And as you mentioned you found a solution to your need.
Our component offers integration with both the Joomla login and the user groups.
We are constantly working on improving our component.
Find out our developing plan at http://www.mgsoftware.ca/future-developments.html
1. Relatively easy to set up.
2. Numerous ways to customize your subscription plans, including ability to assign various user levels to subscribers, trial periods (or not), ability to use your WYSIWYG text editor to write the subscription description.
3. Works well once set up.
Disadvantages:
1. The PayPal IPN url generated by the component was incorrect. The developer was happy to help fix it.
2. The documentation for the component is very minimal. The developer became less and less responsive and I continued to ask questions. I still don't know how to use a couple features.
3. There are 2 emails generated to the subscriber - a welcome email and a cancellation email. There is no "your subscription is about to expire" email. There's no way to customize these emails, and the ones automatically generated have punctuation errors. If you're comfortable modifying the HTML code yourself, you could customize them.
3. There is no way to offer coupons or discounts using coupon codes.
4. Paying for this component does not include updates. The developer offers a subscription for updates for $100/3 months.
We've updated our documentation.
Email customization will be available in our next release.
