A few words about CKEditor:

CKEditor is an online rich text editor that can be embedded inside web pages. It is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor which means that the text edited in it looks as similar as possible to the results end users will see after the document gets published. It brings to the Web popular editing features found in desktop word processors such as Microsoft Word and OpenOffice.org Writer. CKEditor is truly lightweight and does not require any kind of installation on the client computer.

You can learn more about CKEditor on the official CKEditor website (click the "DEMO" link). If you are looking for a package that includes a CKFinder license and a dedicated e-mail support channel, visit http://cksource.com/ckeditor-for-joomla

Please refer to the project homepage (hosted by joomlacode.org) to report bugs or add feature requests.

I used to love this editor, I even recommended it to other Joomla users. But recently, I noticed that: 1). this editor strip away my HTML code, regardless that I had already set to "No filter" in Global Configuration. 2). It shows the ads/warning message on the top of EVERY page, even those only show a plain textarea!
The support is even worse! I posted a feature request a long time ago on their forum but never responded by the developers, let alone they never implemented it.

The CKeditor team just ruined the good image of this editor in my mind. I am going to give up and turn to other options.

I used to love this editor. Mostly because it's very easy to use and customize for my clients. It seems recently, though, there have been some changes. The editor instantly strips your end of lines and spaces so it looks like crap once create nice-looking structured code and switch back and forth from the source to the WYSIWYG. Great for end-users, but not so great for developers. I don't know why they would ever do such a thing to an editor that used to be my favorite.

Hi tim92109,
we are sorry to hear that you are not satisfied with CKEditor. From your description it is quite difficult to understand what could possibly have gone wrong, so it would be great if you could use the tracker (see http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/ckeditor/tracker/) to file a detailed bug report.
If you give us more details about your setup, explain the problem, and paste some code samples ("before" and "after" the change), our developers will be able to investigate. Without this information it really is difficult to find the reason for unexpected CKEditor behavior.

I had been using CK Editor since before it was called CK editor. I recently needed to redo a huge website and thought I'd try a new, highly rated editor, so I installed another of the popular Joomla editors. I tried that for a few days, and even paid for an extension to make it do what I always got CK Editor to do for free. Well, I came away disappointed, and am happily back to using CK Editor. Yes, it's a bit more trouble to install CK Finder (once), but once done, my time spent editing is actually MUCH faster than with the other editors. Some things I love about CK Editor:

I can swith between code view and design view while the editor is still fully maximized... a big time saver.

I can drag multiple images from my desktop right in to the ck finder window, into the folder I choose.

I found it a lot easier to make the editor css style view match my front end website view and css style.

It is a breeze to make custom templates.

So for anyone who has a negative experience with this great editor, there must be something they have done incorrectly. Plus, it's a totally free extension for Joomla.

This is the worse extension I came across, the owner claims it is free, but for example he charges forum support and for some vital plugins like uploading media files.

He should just comercialize the whole thing.

I dont know why 90% or extensions become comercial.

Also when i unistall this buggy thing, I cant login into administrator any more, I get blank screen.

Stay away, dont support sneaky developers like that.

We are really sorry to hear you are disappointed with the extension, however, there seems to be some misunderstanding here and we are not entirely sure you are, in fact, reviewing our extension available here.

The CKEditor extension is totally free, it is an Open Source product and you can use it however and wherever you wish. As for support, a bug tracker is publicly available (see http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/ckeditor/tracker/) and you are most welcome to use the community support forums (http://cksource.com/forums/) -- both options are free of charge. Full documentation is also available for your convenience: http://docs.cksource.com/CKEditor_for_Joomla

It is also not true that you need to pay to upload files -- you can easily use the built-in Joomla functionality for that. As for other "vital" plugins: if you mean CKEditor plugins, we neither create nor charge for them -- they are community work and are available at our forum, mostly for free: http://cksource.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=18

The only thing that you could, potentially, pay for, is the commercial version of the extension that is bundled with CKFinder (an advanced file manager) and 24h dedicated e-mail support channel. However, this is a separate product (http://ckeditor.com/ckeditor-for-joomla) that is *not* available in The Joomla! Extensions Directory and has never been advertised as "free".

As for the bug that you experienced, see here: http://www.gavick.com/magazine/white-page-after-uninstalling-extension-what-to-do.html
If you are sure that our extension is causing the problem, we would kindly ask you to file a bug report at our tracker, we will be more than happy to look into this issue and correct it. Much appreciated!

1st of all, excellent extension, the best WYSIWYG editor ever, but my questoion is about user directory. Could somebody explain to me, how to setup a single and own image directory for each user. example : main directory : images and sub directories : user1, user2, user3 and so on - especially for k2 media. Thanks in advance for your help.

Thank you for your review. This place is not the best to find support. Please read manual about configuration of resource types: http://docs.cksource.com/CKEditor_for_Joomla/Configuration#Resource_Types_Configuration.
You can use CKSource forum http://cksource.com/forums or Joomla's forum: http://forum.joomla.org/.

The editor itself is pretty good. Nothing special, works like other good editors.

Now my major beef with CKEditor is having to install CKFinder in order to use the upload and file browser. This is really annoying. I don't understand why it can't be integrated into the install package like Joomla CK Editor. I end up having issues every time with CKFinder, and end up spending an hour trying to figure out where the problem lies. To add to this, the free version now displays an annoying large banner in the backend boldly saying 'You are using a demo version...' Annoying. Editors should be free, in my opinion.

I've since moved on to Joomla CK, which works perfectly, and with file browser and uploader, right out of the box.

In the end, it's still a very good editor, and I'm very familiar with it, having used it since it was FCK. But given the problems and having to manually install and configure and fight with CKFinder, I would consider trying other alternatives.
Owner's reply

We're afraid that there is some confusion here and you are not, in fact, reviewing the version that is available in the Joomla! Extensions Directory (i.e. this site).

Let us explain briefly.
There are two versions of the CKEditor for Joomla! extension:
- The Open Source one, available at http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/edition/editors/12821, that does not include or require CKFinder.
- The commercial one, available at http://ckeditor.com/ckeditor-for-joomla, that comes with CKFinder already licensed and integrated and also includes enterprise-level support.

As mentioned above, the Open Source version that is available for download and review on this site does not include CKFinder and does not require it for file upload functionality. You can easily upload your files in the CKEditor for Joomla! extension without CKFinder by using the built-in Joomla! functionality. Additionally, we are unable to publish CKFinder in the Joomla! Extensions Directory since it is not an Open Source product and it requires a separate license.

The message about using the demo version that you are getting results from the fact that you *did not use* the Open Source version, but instead tried to use the commercial one downloaded from http://ckeditor.com/ckeditor-for-joomla without obtaining a license. This was not really needed -- you are free to use the Open Source version that is available at this site and use the Joomla! upload functionality for file upload. And you are of course also most welcome to use the commercial version, too, with all its benefits (i.e. CKFinder license and support channel), just please buy a license first :-)

We are sorry about any inconvenience caused. We do hope that with the confusion cleared you will be able to choose the version that you prefer and give CKEditor a(nother) try!

I mostly use HTML to place content on my Websites. Other people must edit the site as well that do not know HTML. This is where CK Editor does a wonderful job of giving restricted functions as an editor for the frontend. People love it.
Okay I use it from time to time and find it a joy to use. I have used all the other editors but CK Editor provides the functionality I require for the other people who edit the site, while keeping things as simple as possible.
Love it, Love It, Love it!

I have to say this is one of the best editors ever. It is fully featured and more user friendly than most editors.
I have been using this editor integrated to a Wiki for some time now, and I was thrilled to discover that it also exists for Joomla.

Pros: User-friendly, as many features as JCE
Cons: Lack of a "clean the messy code" function
