I saw some attacks towards developers on countless component listings, and my PERSONAL opinion a lot of them are not based on facts, but general frustration toward "commercial" attitude of some developers who leave us students with "castrated-to-uselessness" versions which are horrible. I cannot afford $50-$100 for extension, my next meal I'm buying with quarters that i saved up during last 2 days. So after seeing price tag after price tag, etc... Even most patient young person is gonna blow out in somebody's face. Not every of us students is a developer working for rich company who can provide expenses. So it does get insane, so God knows i understand. But!
If everything would be donation based nobody would get paid. 'Cause i might just be an only idiot who doesn't mind paying when there is money in the pocket. I'm sure each of you know at least 1 person who's been doing open-source development for years..... And after 1000000 man hours of coding that kind-minded individual has a charity of Buddhist Monk, and like any true Buddhist Monk has less money that i do now which is impossible.
So give people freedom NOT to pay anything, and they WONT pay anything. Rarely anybody parts with money on voluntary basis.
So there is nothing wrong with developers getting angry in very same manner and just slapping price tags after leaving "castrated" versions for free use.
If we don't like that i guess we should all make effort to support developers who have not lost their faith in doing good products for free. And in return they wont loose faith in US users and will maybe "cut" something less 'valuable' from their freebie versions of their software. Its a deadly circle, start paddling in other direction.

EXTENSION OPINION + SUGGESTION:
Now as for actual extension + rest, its a excellent idea. Its suited for some of the tasks that CB for example would require some twisting and customizing. Most likely CB would require buying something commercial to extend it into form where Online Community functions as a network of interest groups. I despise CB for charging for documentation, IMHO... But i wont copy it from my friend on principle. So if i gotta build portal of online communities and interest groups i would use this one. Depending on its performance.
My opinion - COMPONENT HAS GREAT POTENTIAL & HIDEOUS WEB DESIGN on DEMO site. Hope some people didn't think that those huge square images were banners? Those are actual menu items. :) LOL... But design is is such insignificant part, so "great potential" is the heart of the comment and web design comment is mostly a joke.
Now performance part... Demo is cool and juicy guys, but it does not give full satisfaction nor experience - I'm still thirsty to try more.
Today me and my friend pitched together and bought commercial component. REASON: Guys who sold it, obfuscated the code and allowed us to install FULL version which worked in every way real thing would do for 30 days or so days.
After we ran a train on that component, we decided we are in love and though there was 89 cents between two of us, we loaned money and got it. Just because after using it for a test site, we decided that life with Joomla development will be more rich and EASY with that component, while securely and legally resting in our pocket with a note "You're free to use me anywhere" attached to it.
If they didn't let us use it, we would've never purchased it. 'Cause it was leaving too much doubts in its "free" form. But those developers found a solution to keep their work safe while letting us test it for days in fullest form.
Protect your code and let use hammer your product to pieces while it has all features for limited about of time. In it's current form, with current demo, with current "feel" of it - I'd never purchase it - too uncertain.
Three Versions Would Be Great: FREE, FULL (10 day trial), FULL everything
I think you'd get further that way. Purely sharing personal opinion as consumer, in hopes of helping some.
BOTTOM LINE: (Besides me needing to stop drinking Red Bulls.) This one is A LOT OF PROMISE. I hope you guys take it to new heights and we will decent component for this specific type of online communities/portals.
(Actually i remember some time ago my friend was working for people who were making a big project for some client company that as doing just that: Communities which contain groups, groups which contain people, and all that is intertwined with messaging, searches, relationships, etc.... So you are building something that for sure will sell, if you work and market right you'll also help a lot of "joomlers". Rawk on.)
We support ALL customers and answer ALL support tickets! We offer limited support during weekends, greek-holidays, and any other time than 10:00 to 19:00 (GMT+2). All tickets are sorted on a priority list, and that's how we answer them. There are NO un-answered tickets on our system! Your comments are unfair! Your tickets HAVE been answered!
SuperGroups FREE version is NOT a trial version! We never said that, neither did we advertise it this way ever! SuperGroups FREE version is for the people who do not want to spend the money to buy the commercial version, and want to settle for a Group solution that has less features than the commercial one. Obviously you never even tried out SuperGroups, when you say it's a "comment box"!!! What makes it even more obvious is the fact that you compare JComments with SuperGroups, when these 2 extensions are TOTALLY different!!! So, how can you judge and rate an extension, when you haven't even tried it???
However, if you want to tweak it a bit (like adjusting the parameters) and you do not have much php scripting experience, you might want to doublecheck whether there is another similar component that is more flexible. Sadly the forum of Supergroups does not seem active and the developer has not answered any of my request.
