I, like many other people, seem to be registered on an abundance of these sites (twitter, pownce, plurk, kwippy etc) while everyone I know either has no interest, or are maybe registered on one. Yet, no two friends are on the same network (which explains my multiple registrations).
So I figured the best place to post these messages, for everyone to see them, was on my own site. Sure I could add a blog entry, but that's time consuming for a quick 'I'm eating chicken soup' type message these social networks are popular for.
Enter Ping.fm. Ping.fm is a site that makes life easier for people like me. They are a 'one stop shop' for sending these status messages to all the social networking sites, whether it's from a form on their site, via an email, or via one of several IM 'bots' (ie, from within Google Talk). The one place they couldn't send the message was to my Joomla-based site. So I created JoomPing.
The JoomPing component works in two ways: It is called via Ping.fm's CustomURL service and adds the status message to the database. It can also be displayed via a menu link, and, in this instance, will display received status messages. There is also a module that can be added to any page you want to display the last 'x' number of Pings. I have it displayed on my home page, so that people can instantly see what I'm up to.
Please note: Unzip the package first. There is a component and a module that need to be installed.
Another fine component/module from Nick Texidor. It does exactly what it says, and Nick seems to always be available to assist if needed. If you use Ping.fm to update all of your social networks like I do, this is a great addition to you site to show your current status updates.
