Multilang M17n ComponentModulePlugin

If you are using Joomla 1.7+ there's no need for this module anymore. The concept of 'horizontally' linking the different languages of menu items but also allowing single items now is incorporated in the core.
Using 1.7+? read this: http://community.joomla.org/blogs/community/1468-multilang-in-17-whats-new.html

If possible it is advised to upgrade your 1.6 environment to a 1.7 one. (check your other extensions and template if it can be done!)

If you are using joomla! 1.6+ or you are still testing 1.7alpha and beta, see the site for more information. With Multilang M17n for Joomla! 1.6+ you now can have similar functionality without hacks to the core... the one for 1.6+ is only a module!

News! A bug fix release; 'section blog' is fixed

News! Multilang M17n has moved.... as of now you can find it at g17l.com... It also no longer needs registration to download.

Multilang M17n now also provides flags for regional languages and country specific variants like en-US, pt-BR, fy-NL, wa-BE... etcetera...

Multilang M17n is an easy to use multilingualisation tool for Joomla. It takes care of the front end language selection by using M17n from SDIC, all credits for that are for them. Upon choosing a language with the front end language selector Multilang selects only those articles with the language parametersettings set to that language. The standard search plugin, latest news-, most read- and newsflash module have been adapted. Also it will allow users to submit their articles in the right language. Multilang uses hacks in standard Joomla files and it has been tested with Joomla 1.5.23. When installing the original files will be backed up. Upon uninstalling the files are recovered. (* read the manual. Multilang does not interfere with your database.

I'd love to help you, can you specify a bit more?
Joomla! version, PHP version, Template used, etcetera..

But for starters, check this: If you are using a PHP version PHP5.3+ you probably need the fix. As described in: http://g17l.com/lingua-en/81-beta-patch-php53x.html

It’s great! Really completes the huge lack in Joomla! 1.6 language management. If you want to have a professional and more advanced language switcher, you have to use this. Really easy to use and functional. Highly recommended.

I have just started using it, and I haven’t experienced any problems so far ;)

I think this is a great idea and should be a core feature. I have the joomla switcher working but as yet can't get this to work (sure I will soon).
Owner's reply

Hi,

It's to be used as a replacement for the core version.
publish the plugin and the m17n module. Unpublish the core language switcher.

Best regards,

I am using it right now. Super cool and super easy to use.... except for one little bug:

I have two languages. two sets of menus, associated with two sets of articles.

When I click on a language, It takes me to an article/menu that I do not want to show up as default.
I have set the default pages for each language, but the m17n doesn't seem to notice that.

Hi,
I just dont get it !
Your "module" is just a copy of the core one.
Why anybody would use it?
I think you must tell this instead of making people thinking that you are doing more.
Owner's reply

When you don't get it, ask questions first before shooting.
Are you talking about the 1.5 version or the 1.6.
The 1.5 version holds several adjustments to the core and a language selector which is not part of Joomla! 1.5
The 1.6 version is an altered version of the language selector. If you use this one you can have associations between menu items. This you cannot have with the original one.
So it would be nice if you took a better look. Don't look at what you think it is you see, but how it works. And if you don't get it; ask! I am here to help.

I think this is a great extension, it makes me able to do what i want with my translation on my site.
But can anybody tell me how I can place the flags of my languages. Now they stick under each other when i put them "left". They are on the right place in the menu but are attached...
Owner's reply

Michael,

Thank you for your review. Regarding the flags;
You can change this in the modules parameters. Look for "separator" and change this to your likings.. carriage return is default. For example on http://g17l.com it is set to "wide space" so they are next to each other. But you can choose for something else also.

The extension is just fantastic. I didn't hope to find such a functionality with "easy to use". I think this is the best language related extension, better then joomfish and jccmulti.

I needed a small number of menu items on my personal web site to be bilingual, and Joomfish seemed overkill to me. A few minutes of Googling came up with this extension.

I did not need to RTFM, but got exactly done what I wanted. It is not too intuitive, but with a bit of tinkering it Just Works.

Good work!

This is a great plugin, on paper, or at least for me. From reading the functionality, this is exactly what I'm after, however, I'm not getting this to work.

I have two languages installed in my Joomla, English and Swedish. I have copied all the menu items and defined languages on each and one of them. The language selector is visible and all. However, all menu items are shown at all times, and the same with articles. When I press swedish, I still see the english menu items and vice versa.

Am I doing something wrong here? I'm running Joomla 1.5.22

Highly recommended. I've been working on a bilingual and soon 4-lingual site... After some initial problems contacted the M17n maker and he even helped me on a Sunday evening with good, precise and fast advice. My site works as a charm! Thanks Pieter, keep up a good work.

I have followed the latest installation instructions, as well as the configuration instructions, up to the Menu parameters where I do not find the "M17n Parameters" in the list of menu parameters.
Yet, the M17n installation of the file '030_Multilang_M17n_1.5_v2.zip' went fine.
I am using Joomla 1.5.22 with PHP 5.2.17 and MySQL 5.0.51a.

Stopped working with PHP 5.3 installed on server - actually the main menu disappeared and official website has same problem too so I am also not able to download beta patch. What a shame, this was the best 1.5.x Joomla multilanguage solution :(
Owner's reply

I installed this on a new installation on 1.5.20 and it worked great and made switching languages easy.

I tried to put it on another new site a week later (also 1.5.20) and it brought it down, front & back end came up with missing line errors and database errors. Made the site entirely unusable. It only took about 10 minutes going though the database using my web hosts phpadmin tools to pick all the m17n lines out of the mysql tables. Soon as I did that the site came back up.

this module is fantastic. Just now I crashed my site but I forgot what I do so I install everything again.

One thing is missing. a mod_menu that is only showing correct language. the menu should also be hidden if no link is in the language.

so because of this my rate is low

Hi,
well, I thought M17 is the tool what I was searching for but unfortunately it didn't work well for me. After the installation of M17 the top_menu didn't show up anymore in my template jaw65. The link to my 2nd language was leading to "joomla.org"!! Well, so I decided to uninstall M17 and this was the worst experience I made with this tool. After uninstall I couldn't work anymore with the main_menue because there was an error in a php-module. Guess what I did!! I installed Joomla again to get rid of the mess. Now I use JoomFish and I'm happy.
I'm sorry that I can't tell something better.

Rudolf,

Sorry to hear that. But many happy users do like the extension. And new users who have problems can always contact me to see if we can solve the problems they have with it.
I never received any message from you telling me your troubles. This way both of us cannot benefit from the things we could have learned solving things.

Regards,

g17l

I had a little problems with the update form Joomla 1.5.15 to 1.5.17 - I lost the menu structure. After I have uninstalled the component manualy and then once more installed, the problem was dissolved immediately. It's a very good, easy to use extension. Thank you!

This component messed up not just my menu as somebody noticed, but the entire site. The component with no reason, after few months disappeared from the components. When de-installed I lost my menus. I'm not newbie with Joomla and I'm sure there's some serious bug in this component.
Owner's reply

Nothing dissapears by it self. Somebody did do something to your site or server. Don't blame the extension.

By the symptoms you describe the most probable cause is a Joomla upgrade not following the manual or a PHP5.3.x upgrade.
The first is described in the manual - in short: uninstall M17n, upgrade joomla, reinstall M17n. All with the FTP layer enabled.
The second can probably be solved by using the betapatch on the site. But hey... that's Beta.

Anyway... always read the manual first... and if you have any questions, please ask these questions first... then shoot.

This module does a great job! I am even more happy about the support. I had a problem with the SEF's and got an answer fast. I gave the author permission to work on the back-end and he did a great job in fixing the problem and is very trustworthy. Two thumbs up!

This was a very useful and used component for Joomla until the latest update. It corrupted mod_mainmenu so that all the menus were not visible. I hope developers will look into it and repair this bug.
Otherwise it's relatively easy to use and understand and it really does its job - link articles in various languages to menus in various languages and display them as such.
I'd be really grateful to be able to use this extention again. Thanks in advance!

Please tell me more about your Update Procedure.. then we I can determine what caused your trouble...
