M17n ModulePlugin

This package allows turning your Joomla website into a multilingual site quickly and easily. The main idea here was NOT to provide a whole "Language Manager" nor to hack all joomla tables to include language locales but rather to use the existing core features to have Multilingualization implemented simply thus efficiently.

PLEASE VIEW THE README FILE BEFORE INSTALLING, THANK YOU
ALSO, DO NOT POST YOUR PROBLEMS HERE, SEND US AN EMAIL. THANKS.

One thing I really appreciate at M17n (which I have been using for years now in the multi-language site) is that all the settings which concern language-affiliation of menu items do NOT go lost even when you unistall the component. I did so - mistakenly - and was afraid that I now would have to enter all the settings for (in my case) hundreds of menu items. But when I re-installed M17n, all the settings were yet there. This saved me at least 8 hours of work... Thank you for this wise programming!

I upgraded my site from 1.5.15 to 1.5.22. Following the guidelines found here, I removed the M17n extension before upgrading and re-installed it after, everything worked with no issue. Make sure you reset the module parameters after reinstalling.
Excellent and simple to use extension!

The extension works great on my local test site, but when I uploaded it to my actual site, there was a problem: none of my menu elements show.

Please note that I have contacted the developer to get help to fix this problem, but no reply!

I have five languages installed. My site has also quite a few components, plugins, modules.
It all works fine.
I am know following your instructions to hack the code for SEO/SEF to work (problems with joomla´s global option for SEF url)
Most of the problems I have had was because there werent not enought menus and articles created in all the languages. If you do this it all works fine

It worked great at first, then I had an issue come up when I changed around my articles. I started to go a bit crazy so I emailed what was happening that night and the next morning I had a response. Problem fixed! A quick and helpful reply!

I got a little delayed in reviewing this extension but since they were so helpful I had to come back and give them a thumbs up, even if this does come weeks later!

Played around for hours trying to get Joomfish to work, failed dismally. Uninstalled and tried this extension - had completed most of the actual translations on my site in a tenth of the time I spent messing around with Joomfish! Needless to say, very pleased. Operation is quite simple after you read the "readme" file. This extension is not over-engineered - it just gets the job done. Well done.

Hi! I just wanted to thank you and add that it does work with SEO activated for me and that a menu item's child in a second language has to be assigned to the proper parent menu item of that language in order to be seen(in the Menu Item Details).
Some people may say "these things are easy to see" but I liked the extension and if someone that is considering to use it, read some of the comments below may get discouraged. I use joomla! 1.5.10 with greek language pack and M17n v1.5.2, I am a noob and I had no problem.

Hi... thanks for a very good & useful components. Simple yet powerful. I even switch from Joomfish and using this components . Joomfish is too much hasle.

I only gave average rating, since i've found some bugs.

1. FrontEnd Article editing error. You can't edit your article from FrontEnd
2.If you have Menu Item with child, and you change the language for the parents menu item. The Child menu has become invisible in menu manager, both in Universal Language and in the specified language.

For future improvement, how about adding GroupKey, that grant access to specific UserGroup. I think it will save the hassle for typing individual user.

Hello!

First of all thank You for this component! It is really simple and very convenient to use.

I have just one problem. When installing the component, it creates files and folders, and sets limited permissions for them. This may serve for good security. But, in some cases, when the installation failed for several server issues, I should delete the M17n folders manually. I cannot delete these folders, as I have not permissions, and also cannot change the permissions. The uninstall does not work, as the installation is not finished.
I think it would be better to set more privileges on the files that is installed on server.
After the installation is complete user could protect the files by himself, setting needed permissions.
And again, thanks for the component!

The system is very easy to use... with 2 languajes.

The only problem I have is that with the combination of Firefox-JAFlowlist (from Joomlart) the whole thing is bugged.

It works ok IE-JAFlowlist-

Thank you for publishing such a simple and yet excellent extension!
I like the simple logic behind the idea, though it took me some time to figure out how to manage the menu system.
Only the main page makes me worry since the main-page-articles show up in all languages whatever I try to set.

I want to thank you for this wonderfull module, and that is most of all because of the simplicity. Using joomfish in Joomla 1.0X and bein shocked of all the core changes that package does, it took me a while before I got the hang of this one. When I finally did, I was astonished by the simplicity and easiness this module brings.

Short how-to: first of all; translate all of your sections and categories to the second (and 3rd...) language. Then, hit the menu and set all existing links to your 1st preferred language. Third step is to make new links to your 2nd preferred language. Things like the standard 'contact form' won't need any change at all, leave 'em to 'universal'.

I like the idea of M17N very much! It works great, but when you want to use other SEF or SEO components, it fails...
Like SH404SEF or the SEO patch for joomla 1.5. After you install these, M17N doesn`t work proper. I hope in the future it will support these components / modules.

You read my mind! I was looking for an extension that provided this very function weeks ago!

Works great! Highly recommended!

Oh wish that it would support the URL rewrites builtin to joomla like http://yoururl.com/en/index.html

Super Extension. Easy to use and do what it should do.
I asked support about using it with joomla 1.5.3. It works but you have to reinstall the component and reset the M17n menu selector (module) to be shown on all pages.
Now works great and you don't lose any settings in your menus. ;-)

Great work, great support, great extension!

For those of you that are wondering, m17n v1.5.1 seems to be working nice with the latest joomla update. Looks like the fix that was needed joomla 1.5.2 is not needed in 1.5.3 anymore.

I'll do a few more testing but so far everything seems just fine.

edit:it seems that using m17n 1.5.1 brokes the creation of new menu entry in joomla 1.5.3. Sadly we'll need to wait for a new update ;)

Hi John,
Well people using the 1.5.3 version of Joomla should have M17n 1.5.2 installed. M17n 1.5.1 does not work with either Joomla 1.5.2 or 1.5.3. I will suggest to always use the latest M17n package if using the latest version of Joomla.

This plugin is very usefull, but the support is really inactive, I sent several messages (3 messages) to the author of the plug without receiving any response.

In joomla 1.5.2, it is impossible to insert a single article in any menu.

Hi Burk,
Well I am sorry that it fell on you but we have been quite busy these past two weeks and I was not able to handle M17n support during that time. I dedicate to M17n user support as much as time allows me and I really hope you will get better luck next time (as there will be more and more and more joomla updates). I will do my best to respond to support request in 24 hours but please be patient as sometimes it may take a few days (4 in your case).

Besides, if you did fix a bug or if you have it solved by someone else (like you told me by email), feel free to send us your contribution so we can provide it to the WHOLE community much more faster. Yet the new version also includes some changes you may find usefull. I strongly encorage every user who uses and likes the package to submit contributions, enhancements or simply suggestions to help us keeping this package a great tool (I think it is called Open Source and it does matter :) I hope you will be happy with the new release and I also hope that a next joomla update wont come out before june =)

Currently, Joom!fish does not work for Joomla 1.5, neither with legacy plugin.

M17n works perfectly with legacy plugin and 1.5 native. Its works better creating the menus from scratch. Technical support from developer is excellent.

Feature request:

Currently, I have to multiple every article in each language then it looks bad organization with articles in two languages. I can imagine it will a big mess with more than 2 languages.

2 solutions:

1.Include the language selector in the article manager
2.It will fantastic to access all articles from the language manager, clicking in the language. It will look more intuitive.

This modules works for Joomla 1.5 and it is in the fast-track to be the best solution for multilingual sites.
Owner's reply

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your feedback. actually I am planning to develop the first of your two solutions in a near-future release, just like you can find it in the menu manager. Still, I will use the native language parameter that the contents already uses and I am going to try to "link" the menu and the content language so that one you change one it changes the other to keep it consistent and simple.

That will also allow me to go on with the M17n search and M17n frontpage components that are not functional at the moment. Also, it will provide us more control over the content management process when dealing with several languages and will allow us more interactivity in our future developments. I hope that will be done and published during the summer. Thank you again for your feedback.
