Multilang M17n ComponentModulePlugin

News! A bug fix release; 'section blog' is fixed

News! Multilang M17n has moved.... as of now you can find it at g17l.com... It also no longer needs registration to download.

Multilang M17n now also provides flags for regional languages and country specific variants like en-US, pt-BR, fy-NL, wa-BE... etcetera...

Multilang M17n is an easy to use multilingualisation tool for Joomla. It takes care of the front end language selection by using M17n from SDIC, all credits for that are for them. Upon choosing a language with the front end language selector Multilang selects only those articles with the language parametersettings set to that language. The standard search plugin, latest news-, most read- and newsflash module have been adapted. Also it will allow users to submit their articles in the right language. Multilang uses hacks in standard Joomla files and it has been tested with Joomla 1.5.10. When installing the original files will be backed up. Upon uninstalling the files are recovered. (* read the manual. Multilang does not interfere with your database.

Thanks for the great extension, it really helped me.
BTW I was upset a little bit because of the SEF problem, and I found a simple workaround. If you call $mainframe->route() before importing system plugins, the problem seems to be solved. Of course it's a kind of emergency but still it works for me )

Thanks for the extension once again!

Thank you very much. We would of course be very happy if you would share your workaround with the world. Would you please tell us how you achieved this step by step?

It is based on a totally different concept. I have used Joomfish and I must say that "the best" between these two is the one that fits better into each user's needs.
Up until now I can't see how it could work if the site contains extensions for downloading, galleries etc.

This plugin makes it simple to have more than one language on your site. No more fish for me ;)

This works just fine. It took me only 10 minutes to install, configure and use this fine Extension. Nice job!

Hi all, I just signed up to underline that it's a luck to have a test site running locally, when testing modules like this one: it simply crashed down all my backend/frontend layout SOON AFTHER INSTALLING! Maybe it's an issue due to unappropriate local IP address, anyway I will not test it for sure on my official site!
It's funny to notice that the module not even appeared on pages, so it was not able to make any operation at all, unless messing up all layout and design... very funny! So you clients, please test it before trust it, and you coders, remember that module has to translate only TEXT...not IMAGES or LAYOUTS!
P.S. I gave you 2 stars 'cause I don't wanna be too mean!!! ;-)

I am very sorry your local setup is not able to run anything as it should be. But why give Multilang M17n a bad review if you don't know if that is the cause?

Installing the Extension: make sure your FTP layer is enabled.
If you want to see the module:
- do publish the module where you want it to be
- do create menu entries for all desired languages
- and of course create content in the languages you want

And also I don't want to be mean: get your localhost in order and "RTFM" :)

Hi your component looks good however I have some questions mainly concerning the way the search engine robots will behave with it, and the detection of the user's native language:
1) I reserved many domain name from different origins like myname.fr, myname.de, myname.com ....
I would like those to lead via .htaccess to the same joola site and ten I will declare myname.fr, myname.de.... to the search engines and wait for the robots to come. and of course, when the robot lurks, I would like it to be served the french content when the robot comes from the frnech link, the german content when it comes from the german link etc. How to achieve that?
2) Is it possible that when the user comes with a browser with french locales to be switched automaticly to the franch content, and the same for german and any language that I wish to respond to.
Best regards Marc

Mherv, thank you for your reaction. True, these are things which are not yet covered by Multilang M17n. But... yes these are things very high on the agenda as is SEO support.

Also if anyone has some other feature requests, please come forward!

Great extension, works like a charm. This was exactally what I was looking for. Having the language flags at the top of your weppage, and clicking on them will change the main menu. This is what I wanted. My compliments :)

It's a clean, simple and effective component.
I love it!!

I have just installed the M17 multilingual system in my Joomla website and it works perfectly.

I just miss the ability to set a different order for the flags at the module position instead of the default one.

M17n it's a really great extension... It offers a real multilang for joomla and not a translation system like joomfish!. However, it would be better if it could give multilang support to Virtuemart.
Hi,

I have been looking for an extension like this for a few days. I've tried some others but they did not work as well, for a whole variety of reasons. It took me just 1h to install and put my entire site with two front-end languages that the users can manage. Simple and eficiente. Excellent job!

Just wondering:
- Is there a possibility to have small flags to identify the languages?
- I dont intend to translate the whole site, just some menus. Is there a possibility for the "empty" menus of the second language not to apear at all, since they have items to show?

Thanks a lot!
Owner's reply

Thank you for your positive review.
- Yes of course you can show flags. You can select the way the language selector appears in the module's parameters.
- Easiest way is to just have all items with their parameter set in one menu...having additional menu's? Then assign them in the modules "menu assignment"
You can read all about it in the downloadable manual.

After i decided to use joomla for our new website i searched for options to have the site in 2 languages. (german/english) joomfish was for me as a newbie too complicated so i decided to install M17n.
Pieter did a great job on this extension. M17n is very easy to use. the extension just creates an additional parameter for all menu entries where you give an association key to the language you use.
one thing i had problems with sometimes is the joomla field "alias" under the title. if in both languages the title is the same (for example "Workshop") then joomla creates the same alias and the language tool has difficulties with it. so you only have to add a string to get it to work again.
the tool is fantastic and easy. the only barrier apeared when we decided to integrate a shop. because m17n doesen't create the additional parameters for the shop modules (like virtuemart) and i didn't want to change to a different module, i decided to have an external shopping cart under a subdomain to solve that problem.

This component ROCKS!!

And I like how you took the m17n readme and made a beautiful manual out of it!
