Multilang M17n ComponentModulePlugin

If you are using Joomla 1.7+ there's no need for this module anymore. The concept of 'horizontally' linking the different languages of menu items but also allowing single items now is incorporated in the core.
Using 1.7+? read this: http://community.joomla.org/blogs/community/1468-multilang-in-17-whats-new.html

If possible it is advised to upgrade your 1.6 environment to a 1.7 one. (check your other extensions and template if it can be done!)

If you are using joomla! 1.6+ or you are still testing 1.7alpha and beta, see the site for more information. With Multilang M17n for Joomla! 1.6+ you now can have similar functionality without hacks to the core... the one for 1.6+ is only a module!

News! A bug fix release; 'section blog' is fixed

News! Multilang M17n has moved.... as of now you can find it at g17l.com... It also no longer needs registration to download.

Multilang M17n now also provides flags for regional languages and country specific variants like en-US, pt-BR, fy-NL, wa-BE... etcetera...

Multilang M17n is an easy to use multilingualisation tool for Joomla. It takes care of the front end language selection by using M17n from SDIC, all credits for that are for them. Upon choosing a language with the front end language selector Multilang selects only those articles with the language parametersettings set to that language. The standard search plugin, latest news-, most read- and newsflash module have been adapted. Also it will allow users to submit their articles in the right language. Multilang uses hacks in standard Joomla files and it has been tested with Joomla 1.5.23. When installing the original files will be backed up. Upon uninstalling the files are recovered. (* read the manual. Multilang does not interfere with your database.

This module does a great job! I am even more happy about the support. I had a problem with the SEF's and got an answer fast. I gave the author permission to work on the back-end and he did a great job in fixing the problem and is very trustworthy. Two thumbs up!

This was a very useful and used component for Joomla until the latest update. It corrupted mod_mainmenu so that all the menus were not visible. I hope developers will look into it and repair this bug.
Otherwise it's relatively easy to use and understand and it really does its job - link articles in various languages to menus in various languages and display them as such.
I'd be really grateful to be able to use this extention again. Thanks in advance!

In the beginning, it's a bit of getting used to how the system works, but once you've figured that out (it isn't too hard really) it works great!

Some extensions have an additional Joomfish plugin, so then I wonder if they will work in other languages without Joomfish and its plugin, but this extension handles it perfectly! I certainly recommend!

I have been struggling with a dropdown menu in two languages. Two possible solutions:
1- create a very complex split menu
2- use M17n and do the job in a few minutes.
The module and plugin work like a breeze. It's isn't install & play, you really have to read the manual. No problem. RTFM!!! Read the fantastic manual, it is well worth it. Clear and to the point. Read it and you get M17n running in a few minutes.

"goed gedaan, jochie!" ;-)

The idea behind this extension is good, though it is not working and when you uninstall it, it will mess up your menus !
Not working because it doesnt show the home page (front page view) of the second language but only a blank page, the link is messed up and points to nowhere. Furthermore no SEO support.

Thanks to the authors anyhow for the good will and the effort and open source code, that should be appreciated !

Anyhow please make sure the user can at least get rid of the installation with uninstall / in my case an ugly empty select box remained in the backend menu page and the menus of the second language disappeared after uninstall.

Daniel,

Did you install the extension according to the instructions?
As a normal uninstall will replace the original Joomla files. Unless you did not have your FTP layer enabled.......

Wonder what you did exactly...

Anyone with some trouble.... just send me an email I will always try and answer within shortest possible time...

Very nice and not-so-bloated extension, BUT... Installed this months ago, when a customer wanted a bilingual site, but then he didn´t get around to translating content, so I deactivated M17n and started with a simple german site. By now, english translations arrived and I activated M17n again. Alas, M17n Parameters didn´t show up no more. Took me hours to find out that I should have deinstalled and reinstalled this extension when updating the Joomla! core. Now that I got everything going I noticed that there seems to be no automatic language detection for new visitors and that everyone starts from the standard german page?! Can this be? Shouldn´t there be one? Is there some switch or some simple solution that I overlooked?
Owner's reply

Thank you for your reaction.
Multilang M17n does not make an automatic language detect (yet).. but it does 'remember' the language which was chosen by the viewer... at least when the viewer does not erase his cookies that is..:)
Anyway, it is on the feature wish list....

Thanks for the great extension, it really helped me.
BTW I was upset a little bit because of the SEF problem, and I found a simple workaround. If you call $mainframe->route() before importing system plugins, the problem seems to be solved. Of course it's a kind of emergency but still it works for me )

Thanks for the extension once again!
Owner's reply

Thank you very much. We would of course be very happy if you would share your workaround with the world. Would you please tell us how you achieved this step by step?

It is based on a totally different concept. I have used Joomfish and I must say that "the best" between these two is the one that fits better into each user's needs.
Up until now I can't see how it could work if the site contains extensions for downloading, galleries etc.

Hi all, I just signed up to underline that it's a luck to have a test site running locally, when testing modules like this one: it simply crashed down all my backend/frontend layout SOON AFTHER INSTALLING! Maybe it's an issue due to unappropriate local IP address, anyway I will not test it for sure on my official site!
It's funny to notice that the module not even appeared on pages, so it was not able to make any operation at all, unless messing up all layout and design... very funny! So you clients, please test it before trust it, and you coders, remember that module has to translate only TEXT...not IMAGES or LAYOUTS!
P.S. I gave you 2 stars 'cause I don't wanna be too mean!!! ;-)
Owner's reply

I am very sorry your local setup is not able to run anything as it should be. But why give Multilang M17n a bad review if you don't know if that is the cause?

Installing the Extension: make sure your FTP layer is enabled.
If you want to see the module:
- do publish the module where you want it to be
- do create menu entries for all desired languages
- and of course create content in the languages you want

And also I don't want to be mean: get your localhost in order and "RTFM" :)

Hi your component looks good however I have some questions mainly concerning the way the search engine robots will behave with it, and the detection of the user's native language:
1) I reserved many domain name from different origins like myname.fr, myname.de, myname.com ....
I would like those to lead via .htaccess to the same joola site and ten I will declare myname.fr, myname.de.... to the search engines and wait for the robots to come. and of course, when the robot lurks, I would like it to be served the french content when the robot comes from the frnech link, the german content when it comes from the german link etc. How to achieve that?
2) Is it possible that when the user comes with a browser with french locales to be switched automaticly to the franch content, and the same for german and any language that I wish to respond to.
Best regards Marc

Mherv, thank you for your reaction. True, these are things which are not yet covered by Multilang M17n. But... yes these are things very high on the agenda as is SEO support.

Also if anyone has some other feature requests, please come forward!

Great extension, works like a charm. This was exactally what I was looking for. Having the language flags at the top of your weppage, and clicking on them will change the main menu. This is what I wanted. My compliments :)

I have just installed the M17 multilingual system in my Joomla website and it works perfectly.

I just miss the ability to set a different order for the flags at the module position instead of the default one.

M17n it's a really great extension... It offers a real multilang for joomla and not a translation system like joomfish!. However, it would be better if it could give multilang support to Virtuemart.

Hi,

I have been looking for an extension like this for a few days. I've tried some others but they did not work as well, for a whole variety of reasons. It took me just 1h to install and put my entire site with two front-end languages that the users can manage. Simple and eficiente. Excellent job!

Just wondering:
- Is there a possibility to have small flags to identify the languages?
- I dont intend to translate the whole site, just some menus. Is there a possibility for the "empty" menus of the second language not to apear at all, since they have items to show?

Thanks a lot!
Owner's reply

Thank you for your positive review.
- Yes of course you can show flags. You can select the way the language selector appears in the module's parameters.
- Easiest way is to just have all items with their parameter set in one menu...having additional menu's? Then assign them in the modules "menu assignment"
You can read all about it in the downloadable manual.
