Version 2.16 is the latest version. Now Google Maps API version 3 is default so NO GOOGLE API KEY is needed.
Not all features are possible yet with Google Maps version 3. See examples what features are available: http://tech.reumer.net/Google-Maps/Demo-Google-Maps-V3/.
In Joomla 1.6, 1.7 and 2.5 the plugin can be upgraded automatically with the upgrade feature of Joomla at the extensions.
Also added language support for all the parameters: English, French, Italian and Spanish.

2.16 is a stable version and the following changes are made:

The version for Joomla 1.0 will not evolve after version 2.12o. So 2.12o will be the last version for Joomla 1.0. Of course support for Joomla 1.0 is still possible.
This plugin will become one of my favorites.
It gives me full flexibility with built-in google maps, for example concerning map size, map type, location to show when started, and many, many other things. A large number of settings can be made via the backend parameters. Additional settings (such as text to be desplayed with the map) can be put into the {*start-this-here*}-tag in the html code of the article. This allows even to have various maps displayed: With no specific settings in the tag, they use the default settings defined in the backend parameters; if specific settings are added in the tag, those will be used.
The map appears exactly where the tag is put into the html code. This is very convenient for positioning the map inside an article.
As for support: The author, Mike, answered my support question (concerning a parameter settings problem) in one day's time and helped me very effectively to fix it.

I'm a newbie to Joomla and this plugin was easy to get my head around as soon as I cleared up a blooper I made in the code. Thanks Mike for pointing it out!(answered my query even when he was on holiday).
Have been using the plug-in for a while now and all was working fine until I updated joomla. Maps disappeared, so thought I would contact Mike Reumer who, despite being on holiday still responded and diagnosed the issue immediately (nothing to do with the plug in - outdated template is the issue).

Not much to say here. I tested the component thoroughly on my test location before uploading (you can never be too safe). I found the page load times to be very acceptable, the amount of options in the back-end are flooring (in a good way), and it does what you need.
My only suggestion - and this does not affect the rating it receives - is to make it so the "Get Directions" little pop-up window disappears after they click the "Get Directions" button (otherwise it is in the way of the route). This may be a problem with GoogleMaps though, that's why I didn't hurt the rating.
Everything is perfect. Necessary for anyone with an office or hosting events/parties. I am using it on a DJ party website and an insurance agency website :)

I have tried this extension with kml files on my site, it works flawlessly and it has a lot of parameters to work with.
Mike Reumer helped a lot for some settings I didn't know how to use.
Always keep in mind that if you use a good extension with no support, you will have hard times solving problems, this fine plugin has the best support I have found so far, and it's free. I got answered via e mail the same day I asked for help, my problem was solved at once.

This plugin is nothing short of amazing. I've used it on many sites, in many different formats. From a single point maps with directions to a multi point map using a custom KML file. A+++
One note: Google has started offering several map APIs which can be confusing. You can find the standard map API signup needed for this plugin here: http://code.google.com/apis/maps/signup.html The author may want to update the links in the component and help files.

The plugin works very well but the simple directions he has above are not complete and his website listings doesn't specially call out what you need to do. Besides installing the plugin and enabling it in the administrator panel you need to go to http://code.google.com/apis/maps/signup.html and sign up using your domain name. You will also need a google account. The error by the plugin gives you a link but there aren't any links to sign up for a key. I found it by googling for the api key sign up page. What a pain google! You should know better!
If you are looking to add Google Maps to your Joomla website this extension is perfect. It has tons of features and it's super easy to configure. You can literally have it up and running within ten minutes.
I've been using this extension for about a year and a half and it works great.
