jUpgrade Popular Component

Editor's Note
  • This extension requires registration to download.
  • Joomla 1.6 is not an upgrade to Joomla 1.5 - it is a MIGRATION. Please check the information on docs.joomla.org prior to starting the process.
jUpgrade is a simple Joomla 1.5 component that will download a version
of Joomla 2.5, decompress it and install it. After that, it should
migrate all of the data from old Joomla 1.5 to the new Joomla 2.5
installation.

The steps to test it

1) Install the component in your Joomla 1.5 site.
2) Run the upgrade

Requirements

* PHP 5.x
* Curl module of PHP enabled
* Joomla 1.5
* Enable System - Mootools Upgrade plugin that is included in Joomla 1.5.19 and greater.
* A Browser with Javascript/Mootools support

Video Tutorial:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAufYW9SBm8

A new tracker is created for jUpgrade and Joomla 2.5 migrations bugs. You can access (and use it) here:

http://forge.joomla.org/gf/project/joomla/tracker/?action=TrackerItemBrowse&tracker_id=10539

Debugging:

If you have problems with migrations please go to Settings and set "Debug" = ON.

The way to test it:

1) remove ROOT/tmp/joomla25.zip and ROOT/tmp/size.tmp
2) remove ROOT/jupgrade directory
3) delete all j17_ tables (except j16_jupgrade_categories and j16_jupgrade_menus)
4) REMOVE OLD jUpgrade installation and install the version 2.5
5) Set "Skip download" to 'No'
6) F5 to reload the browser
7) Run upgrade

I have used this extension on several sites and I do like it. The only problem that I have with it is that it worked on some sites and not on others. On one site the jUpgrade button did not work and on two other sites the button worked but when I went to view the page I got a 404 error. On the sites that it did work on, it worked very well. Still attempting to debug and see what the problem is with the sites that the extension did not work on. I still like the extension and the concept. When it works it works. When it does then some figuring out is required and I have not been able to find any answer to why I am getting the 404 Error or why the jUpgrade button does not work sometimes. The solution that I saw have not worked. I like the fact that it places the upgraded site in another folder so that you can make everything look like the previous version of your site. Great idea. It just needs bug fixes.

Its great when it functions. I've ported over a few sites with it already. The new requirement of having to register to download it, however, is a frustrating, swear-inducing antagonistic move IMO that knocks it down a full star rating from Good to Average.

The complete structure and framework of Joomla from 1.5 to 1.7 has changed dramatically including the fact that there are now nested categories instead of sections and categories. With that said this component took my site and created a 1.7 version with one click in less than 5 minutes. I enabled the Mootools Upgrade plugin and moved it to the top position of the system plugins and it worked perfect!

Thank you very much for this FREE component.

The migration is working fine, but if you have 10000 links deployed on internet, you will have a big crash on google ranking.
This upgrade don't maintain the same ID of old links, that means your old links will not work

I tried using this.. it doesn't work. I went their forums to find out why and as it turns out the users are trying to solve the problems and not the author. It works on some but seems many more are having a host of problems that can't seem to be solved. I realize it's free but it doesn't work. Price is right, I guess.

It worked very well for me. Now perhaps I did something wrong but it did not swap over my components and such, but I know how to do this manually. I am impressed through that it creates another directory which does not damage the original joomla 1.5 files even after the upgrade. Good concepts, almost seamless.

I am not sure why people are saying "it doesn't work" - it works perfect for me!

I have used it several times and it is fast, simple, and easy!

I understand it works for some and not others and there is nothing to use in order to troubleshoot the problem. In addition, I think it's in poor taste for the Joomla Site Documentation to reference this extension and NOT give an alternative on how to migrate.

I had the error a lot of reviewers are having and found the problem. If mootools is too far down in the "menu list" the system hangs. I told it to be first and the update completed very quickly.

A bit of a disappointment on not bringing over components, modules, and plugins. Using K2 (which I don't need any more with the new nested directories) I have quite a bit of work to do to get that into the article family.

It was very pleasant to get the latest version of Joomla installed and the articles moved over in a very quick and painless effort.

Thanks for the tool. We can't please all the people all the time and it does save a lot of up-front setup time.

I had no problems with the migration, perhaps people that gave a bad review forgot to follow the next important step:

1. Go to Extensions | Plugin Manager
2. Search for "System - Mootools Upgrade"
3. Enable the plugin

It is important that this plugin is installed and that it has been set to enabled, as the proper functioning of jUpgrade depends on it.

Unlike some others before me, I've now applied this "upgrade" to 3 sites and so far not encountered a single problem. It's installed rapidly and easily with no extra work involved in the process and made the whole process SO enjoyable.

So I can't rate it highly enough when I think of the previous hassles I had in migrating from Joomla 1.0 to 1.5!!

For all that I'd equally add my warnings and suggestions that you not only ensure you back up your site (including server structure) but also test it out on a test site rather than a live one if at all possible.

Dear readers,
Kindly be aware that JUPGRADE installs well. But on the other hand, it does not work well. It clocks on CHECKING, then when checked off, it clocks on DOWNLOADING. But the WORST part is no matter how many times you may write to these folks they just ignore you, I have received no reply to 3 Emails I left them and more than one FORUM comment.
THEY LACK COMPLETELY THE CUSTOMER FOCUS AND THEIR APPLICATION NEEDS A LOT OF POLISHING.
I would suggest looking for another one that will pay attention t o you when you write to them.

After following and testing this tool again and again till the 'stable' version I am very disappointed with the final results. The menu item ID's and the category ID's simply changed, even with 'Keep original positions' checked. Also many aliases changed.
Our website is huge and contains thousands of internal links and hundreds of external sites link to our articles.
The result of the migrating process with jUpgrade is very sad. Yes, all the content seems to be there, but many things are mixed up and most of the internal links are broken or point to wrong items. Many links from external sites result in 404 errors, etc...
Fixing all the problems manually is an impossible job.
I asked for support with a serious proposal to pay for it. No reply at all.

Fortunately someone gave me a golden tip to an alternative solution : sp upgrade
It took me less than an hour to migrate our entire site to 1.6. No errors at all, fast and straightforward. All ID's are kept intact. Friendly and fast support. Well worth the 20 euros for this piece of magic.

Managed to make it complete the upgrade eventually by downloading and uncompressing v1.6 manually.

The component managed to successfully upgrade anything that was connected to the core of Joomla (Articles, Users etc.) but failed miserably at migrating my template, extra components and modules.

Tried to run the module several times. First it got stuck after downloading Joomla 1.6 – to get past that point I had to setup the module to skip download…then the installation came a few steps further but now it’s stuck with upgrading progress – migrating undefined its saying in the progress bar.

Imo to many errors that should have been debugged before released to end users.

Will reinstall my backup and try another tool even though this is the one suggested by joomla org. when upgrading from 1.5 to 1.6.

I tried with v1.0.1, and it did a very nice job, now with v1.0.2 and the upcoming kunena support, it's looking even better.
