Best $'s I have ever spent as I had put 12 months work into the website.
Thank You SP
I followed the instruction Jen Cramer listed in her joomla update course:
-ported my 1.5 site over to a test location. (online not local)
and created an spugrade subdirectory in the 1.5 site.
-I made backups of data belonging to extensions (forms, newsletter, etc)
-I then stripped the site of all extensions and none joomla modules
migrated the site
-deleted the original 1.5 site in the root
and copied the content of the 2.5 spupgrade site to the empty root
-I then reinstalled JCE, Akeeba and the other plugins
-tested the test site and
-moved it to the live site.
So far--so good
Of course read the documentation before you start - as always it will make you life easier.
While SP Upgrade does not attempt to migrate extensions, I would prefer to do the extensions manually than use something with appears inherently unstable and does not maintain the integrity of your content ids.
So well done to the developer! A small price to pay Thank you.
The upgrade was simple and easy to implement - what a time saver!
I had only one problem with user preferences in 1.5 causing a login problem in 1.7.3. I wrote to Cyend and they prepared a bespoke version that allowed me to import users without the preferences.
This was support at its very best and is a credit to the ethos of the Joomla Community.
Anyone who is nervous about upgrading to 1.7. or 2.5 - don't worry, this is a fantastic component and well worth every penny.
I wanted to upgrade from 1.5.25 to 2.5.1 and everything broke down and I had to reinstall my site using Akeeba backup.
Then their support migrated my database for e and sent me a migrated one but i still didn´t work. The menues where corrupt and every alias also, so the links didn´t work. I tried three times and then I gave up.
I tried Jupgrade instead and when my webhotell turned off the safe_mode everything worked very nice. Conclusion: Don´t spend money on SP upgrade Use Jupgrade instead.
I ran into a little uncertainly as to the right steps to take and the Support was brilliant to say the least, no question was too small or too time
consuming to answer by Panayiotis Halouvas, if I could rate it higher I would. Excellent! that is all I can say!
Don't waste your time on other tools if you want you Google rank to be safe. This component does the job!
The best use example I can think of to illustrate the benefit of SP Upgrade is this. If you installed a quicklaunch version of template from a template club with lots of demo content and extensions already set up, but now you need your content from your old 1.5 site you can use this extension to import it.
Then I stumbled upon SP Upgrade and it worked so fine! Absolutely uncomplicated, same IDs, including monitoring/log (was very helpful for reviewing the migration, because I have a very large website).
The migration interrupted for 3-4 times (due to my server), but I could continue migration from the point where it stopped.
I am so happy! Thanks :)
I must agree with one of the other posters about jUpgrade. I spent hours on trying this and it did not do the job. Admittedly my site was fairly old and may have had bug in it. The time I spent on various forums didn't resolve the issues. I strongly suggest using SP Upgrade for the very time you will save in this process.
The SP Upgrade component is just what I was looking for. Thanks to the developer for the product, the support and the reasonable cost to purchase it. Well done!
Poof, worked. It was worth paying for.
However, one thing should be noted... this extension requires mySQLi (vs normal mySQL)
I do not know what my problem is/was with jUpgrade. It seems to work for many. The process is a little different also.
jUpgrade is installed in the 1.5 site, and then downloads, installs and migrates. SP Upgrade is installed in a fresh, empty 1.7 site, and pulls the content from the old 1.5 site.
I have a few more sites to migrate over, and I hope everyone goes as smooth as this one. (I'll also try jUpgrade on the others to see if it was just a problem with templates/extensions). If you are have trouble using the 'official' migration tool, try paying for this one and see if it works for you.
Customer service was great, they answered questions before I began the process, since I was pretty nervous, and checked my logs afterwards to verify all had gone well!
