It has also been announced that Legacy mode will no longer be supported in joomla! 1.6. As of 22 July 2009, all native 1.0 components, including com_spurgeon, have been taken off the Extensions list.
Based on these reasons, I spent time to convert this to joomla! 1.5.
Current users of the delisted spurgeon component are encouraged to download and install this native 1.5 extension. All the code has been migrated to Joomla! 1.5 and provides better security and compatibility with future versions of Jooma! During your testing, you do not need to uninstall the previous version. After you have tested the newer component(Spurgeon XHTML) and are fully satisfied, you can uninstall the older one and turn off Legacy.
The usage is the same with the 1.0 component written by Foster Brereton. This native 1.5 component also does not require administration.
To use the component:
a. select the menu under the Menus dropdown and then create a new Menu Item.
b. From the list of components, select Spurgeon XHTML

The simplicity of this component is great. Install, add to your menu and that's it. Works beautifully and adds a great dimension to any Christian website.

I did not use the previous version. I came online looking for something not sure what for a Bible Institute's site and found this newly added component. The installation went smoothly with absolutely no problems whatsoever.
The only thing I would say and that has nothing to do with the functionality and that is the image of Spurgeon is too close to the text.
I will use this component on all of the sites I build for Ministries. Thank you very much!

I've amended the component here:

If you've done some mods and do not wish to uninstall the current component, follow the steps below to edit your current spurgeon_xhtml component:
a) Locate the 'components' directory in your joomla
b) Locate the 'com_spurgeon_xhtml' directory and expand it.
c) Open up the file named spurgeon_xhtml.html.php
d) Locate the line 15
e) Change style="float: left; " to
style="float: left; margin-right:3px; "
If you wish not to have the image, simply comment out or delete line 15.
