The code is compatible with iPhone/iPod touch, iPhone4 and iPad. On older devices the “add” icon is a “+” while on iOS 4.2 it has been replaced with . The script detects the OS version and displays the appropriate icon. The message appears after 2 seconds (customizable) from page load, and is destroyed after 20 seconds (also customizable). The balloon enters and exits the screen with a quick configurable animation: drop from top, bubble from bottom or fade in/out. Additionally it also let you choose a custom icon for your blog when a visitor adds your website to start screen.
Custom Startup images
Specifying a startup image is available in iOS 3.0 and later. On iOS, similar to native applications, you can specify a startup image that is displayed while your website application launches. This is especially useful when your web application is offline. By default, a screenshot of the web application the last time it was launched is used.
Custom Messages
It is possible to override the default message to invite user to add your site to their home screen. In order to be able to support all your visitor locales, you'll have to edit manually the file /media/plg_system_add2home/add2home.js
Viewport
Use the viewport meta key to improve the presentation of your web content on iOS. Typically, you use the viewport meta tag to set the width and initial scale of the viewport.
For example, if your webpage is narrower than 980 pixels, then you should set the width of the viewport to fit your web content. If you are designing an Safari on iOS-specific web application, you should set the width to the width of the device.
“email” describes the properties supported by the viewport meta key and their default values. When providing multiple properties for the viewport meta key, you should use a comma-delimited list of assignment statements.
When referring to the dimensions of a device, you should use the constants described in “number” instead of hard-coding specific numeric values. For example, use device-width instead of 320 for the width, and device-height instead of 480 for the height in portrait orientation.

I have used this plugin for a while now and absolutely love it, as do my clients I set it up for. As for "rwickham" complaint... "Do you really install a new plugin on all your 50 websites before testing it???" The switch out of the images is super easy. Just unzip the Plugin folder switch out the images in the images folder with your Favicon and Mobile Icons. Also change out the Screen start up images "Great place to have an Advertisement... Say Whaaaa..." Re Zip the file and upload to your website. I customize all the images for each individual website. Kudos to the developer!
If you are wanting to add a iOS specific version of your site this plugn is a must-have. I combined this with the taptheme mobile templates ad togather they let you make apps that look like native iOS apps.

Nice idea, but the message "add to home" pops up EVERYTIME when a user view an article and navigate through the mobile-site. The option "expire in min" takes no effect. So you'll get a popup with every article. That's why this plugin is useless. Sorry.

In version 1.6.5 this bug has been corrected and the default value of returning visitor (Show the message only to returning visitors (ie: don't show it the first time)) is now set to true as default
I really like this app. It's simple and works great. But then it replaced my custom icon with a picture of the developers face! Really? His face? What's wrong with the icon I already had? Or even a cool logo? OK, so I can change it in the plugin config, but a really nice app just got really annoying for the 50 sites I maintain.

The favicon.ico you use on every internet site is standardized to size of 16 x 16 pixels

What should I default to? increase your favicon.ico as default? (it may look ugly). Feel free to ask for this features in my support forums
This Does Exactly What it Says. The Icons are easy to set and they show up nicely on the devices.
I like the addition of the customizable start up screen. Now I need an add on to let me save the site menus and select content on the device for off line viewing. Thats beyond the scope of this plugin but it doesntseem far off after installing this.

For a free app. This is great, and the developer deserves big kudos for sharing it. If you have a mobile friendly template, this can be one element to take the place of a paid system like weaver.
However, I can't give it 5 stars because
support is cumbersome. Maybe it's because it's new? At the time of this writing, it's not immediately clear that the support forum on the link above supports this product. I searched the forum for add2home and found nothing. So I decided to register, it has over the top hoops to jump through, hyper strong password requirement + captcha + 3 security questions + email verification + wait for ? to get admin approval.
That said, without support I got it to work and with the provided documentation customized the images and logos etc. It looks great when it's done. But I can't see if there is a way to keep it from popping up when the user already has it on their device. There is a setting to only show up for returning visitors. For my purpose, it would be best to show up only for first time visitors. But this is not a selectable option. Also, I could not see if there is a way to have it only show up when the visitor opens a specific page or pages, right now it pops up at every page load.

Easy to install, customize and works beautifully! Within minutes I have my website on my iPhone, iPad and iPod home screens. Now my customers will too.
