Its increase in performance is remarkable.
But it has another benefit. If you are able to use the Joomla native SEF URL setting and Apache mod_rewrite, your already pretty friendly URL is never broken by the ?start=1 etc. You have a fully SEF URL without a SEF rewriting extension: yoursite.com/category/no-extra-stuff-added. This does not change when you go through the pages.
Note, when you hit your browser back key, it will take you to your category landing page, rather than the previous page. Page control previous/next/number still function as usual. This works for me personally as an end user.
