I'm torn over this review. The component does a great job at what it was meant to do and I can't find any other comparable alternative.

However, what I still really desire is a component that can output a pure Section List, not a list of Category Lists. Unless I'm missing something, this is not that component, but I would hope that future versions move toward offering this as well as the current display.

Also, I really wish it put out an RSS feed. Unless it's a problem on my end, I can't get an RSS feed on this, even though I use it for one of the more important pages of my website with lots of new content.

But, regards to the developer. You started something good here and I hope that open source status will push development of this extension forward.

After some time I finally figured how to make articles expandable. How? When you make your button that is connected to SectionEx Component, under Parameter (Basic), There is a line with 3 choices:
Show Intro Text: Hide|Show as comment|Show as comment - expandable

Choose last one, named "Show as comment - expandable"

It's a great componenet but unfortunately is not compatible with sh404sef. Almost everyone use some sort of sef component, sh404sef is a very popular one, I think it will be great if sectionex will be compatible with it.

Hi, thanks for your feedback. Personally I wont add sh404sef support as I don't need it, sorry. But its open source.... so everyone can do whatever he wants. :)

I've had the need to do this from the beginning of my project.
Works beautifully, except how do I get the Article Title to not to link. I've made the correct parameter selection in the menu. I've also made them in the articles themselves. The article titles still seem to link.

Like others, I've found this extension to be almost perfect. Why almost? Yes, I cannot get it to work with SEF URLs either. I've seen Robert's replies about other sites using it successfully, but that doesn't help me. When I add a sectionex menu item, it returns a 404. Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but for my site it adds extra characters to the URL string that cause a 404.

If I can figure out how to add sectionEx menu items successfully with SEF URLs enabled, this would most certainly be a 5-star review.

Seems like a great component, but it seems like propagation isn't working. When I follow instructions, breadcrumbs still leads to path different than section ex. Without this, it's not too useful for me. Also, menu item isn't highlighted.

This is exactly what I was looking for to help build a business directory site. I am very impressed with its features. The only problem I see is it will not work with Search Engine Friendly URLs turned on. It always adds a category #.html to the url and you end up with a 404.

Hi, SectionEx works with SEO. Just check my Demo-site. If you will google around the WEB you will also find other sites which successfully use it with SEO.

All reports that it doesn't work with SEO until now were due some wrong settings on a site itself - which usually don't have much to do with SectionEx. Please check the Joomla documentation for how to set up SEO correctly.

Kind Regards,
Robert

This is an awesome extension and it work well on our website. Unfortunately I experience the same problem Jeroenla mention in his post.

SEO options enable will cause SectionEX misbehave.

Here is the detail for my observation:

1:: SEO enable (Admin page -> Global Configuration setting)

Under SectionEX option :: Menu and Pathway Behavior

When it set to Front page like article links :: ->
Page article title link did not point to the correct article.
For example::

SectionEX menu show Article Title :: How to install CamStduio on Windows but it actually point to how to install openoffice.org on windows. All titles did not link to the right articles
PDF icon and Print icon behave normal

When it set to SectionEx like Article Links :: ->

All article titles point to the right articles. However, joomla build in PDF and Print function will not work. It show 505 pages not found.

I would love to get this extension working with the SEO setting. If anyone comes across the work around for the issues I listed above, could you please share your resolution with us?

Thanks in advance for all your helps and suggestions.

Best regards,
Gary Wong

Hi, SectionEx works fine with SEO. You can check my demo site or google for other sites around the WEB which are using SectionEx. "jeroenla's" site didn't work because something was wrong with his installation.

About the Print and PDF Icons: Please read the SectionE FAQ. It is quite short and will answer your question.

Kind Regards,
Robert

This is excellent. it really should be part of the core.
It works great, and the admin is really straightforward and flexible.

If I could request one thing it would be a bit more unique styles for individual elements of the page, such as article title... but it's easy enough to edit default_article.php file to make that happen.

thanks for an awesome component!

A straight-forward component that should become part of the Joomla core. It is very useful for sites where listing of articles are required. The install and setup worked great on the first attempt. Thanks for the documentation and for a job well done!

This is quite close to what I needed.

Only it has one major downside: when I use the SEO option in 1.5.3, SectionEx dies. Whenever you try to visit the page, it gives a 404. If it wasn't for that, I'd have given it a lot higher rating... sorry.
Owner's reply

Hi jeroenla, it does work with Joomla 1.5.3 (as it did with 1.5.2, 1.5.1, and 1.5.0). My demo-site runs Joomla! 1.5.3 now, with SectionEx and SEO enabled.
Best Regards, Robert

This component is still saving me hours of time. It builds a page exactly as I wanted to do by hand... and all I need to do is categorize my articles correctly and it does all the work for me. I cannot recommend this component enough. Look it over good, try it out. It's well worth the time! Thanks to the developer! Joomla should consider adding this to the core product.
