Featured Items Module

Editor's Note
  • This extension requires registration to download.
A module extension that displays a short excerpt from articles in a selected category, with link and optional thumbnail image. You can choose the number of characters displayed, the section and category to be displayed, and whether to display thumbnail using the module parameters.

You can specify individual articles, as well as categories and sections.

You can set the thumbnail size, also the articles can be ordered in a variety of ways, allowing the module to function like the 'latest news' module, or the 'most read' module according to your choice. The module can also display articles in a random order, allowing you to display a random selection of articles from a category or section.

The module also includes integration with JomSocial and Community Builder. It can be used to display articles by the profiled user whenever a user profile is viewed.

Further features include:-

1. Firstly the entire article intro text can be displayed, with all html tags, or just an extract.
2. The module supports content plugins.
3. As well as pre-selected categories the module can display articles from the current category or section. This is a powerful feature that now means that you can do things like display a random article, or the latest article from the category currently being viewed.

Once, many years ago, when this was a non-commercial module, it contained ONE link to my own site. It was not 'hidden away in the source code', but easy to find in the template, where anyone could delete it. I don't think that was unacceptable, it was common practice among developers at the time. It was long since removed when it became a commercial module.

Universal AJAX Live Search installed easily for me. I use it in lieu of the standard Joomla search and the YOO Themes search that came with my YOO template.

Purchase was fast and paid through PayPal. Response was automated and I received the download link in a few minutes. I was able to install and configure this quickly using the standard Joomla tools and the expected questions.

I had one back-end issue and was contacted by the developer within hours. The problem was fixed, repair code was sent to me, and the new version was being readied & tested in less than 24 hours. Very impressive!

Try the demo and see. The module looks for the first image in the article displayed and size-adjusts it into an icon for that selection. Slick! The AJAX feature works well, and can be adjusted to the number of significant characters you choose. Styling is a bit limited but more than sufficient for a very small part of the screen.

Recommended highly.

Great just like the random mp3 player I also have. Thanks Fiona. I requested to have a "static entry" in the dropdown menu as an "order" option.

Thanks!

I would have given this module an excellent review as it's really very good however the developer has seen fit to hide a hidden link back to their own website within the source code, this link is set to 'display: none'. You will find this link hidden away in the modules folder/tmpl/default.php or you will see it if you view your page's source code.

I downloaded Featured Items last night, I was really with it. But then I discover the Featured Items Pro on http://www.spiraltemplates.co.uk, I fell in love with it some more. The Pro version has AJAX, Accordion, Tab, thumbnails and "Read more" options. It's a nice module to have.

I was looking for an alternative to the Joomla native article display. This module does it perfectly. 5 stars.

I am displaying this module in an article, so what you see is the title of the article, and the first x amount of characters from each article (configurable in the module) - see here: http://www.consultthestars.com/component/content/article/61

Installed without any issues, and perfect config options for the mod. Well done. Great niche product.

This module is perfect. I can control the amount of text to display in the module which was very important for me, this module did just that.

Very simple and easy to setup.
To the Developer, a BIG Thank you!!

Yes, this is a good plugin, so easy to setup, the required features for this type of module are there.

Thank you, maybe a bit of AJAX or something would be nice for you future release.

I don't understand why your extension is called "featured items", no one have a category where all featured items are. It doesn't make any sense at all, without choosing article id's what's the purpose ? It's obvious for everyone that when you say "featured items" it means that you SELECT the most featured articles from all categories, or just featured items from one category and not a category. I decide what articles are featured, based on my criteria so I must be able to choose different articles from different categories, else it's just like any other module. There are other modules like this but I simply cannot understand why this nonsense it's still in all this modules, featured items cannot be hold in a category or section, I must be able to choose individual articles.
If you do that then this extension will be very very useful, now it's just an extension. There is another extension called "Featured articles", it's a very popular one, you are able to choose individual articles but it lacks the features of the extension you developed, it only list articles, no preview, thumbnail..So if you add the posibility to choose individual articles from different categories this extension will be popular.
I don't want to offend you it's just that everyone seems to follow the same pattern when it comes for certain modules but it isn't the right choice.

I might add the feature you request if there is demand for it. Sorry to hear that you think it is 'nonsense' at the moment, apparently some people find it useful.
