The module offers the following options:
* Show author: Show, Hide
* Author name: Full name, User name, User alias

I downloaded this after a recent server move lost many parts from my main installation including the mod_latestnews module. Unsure how best to replace it any other way, I was glad to find this replacement one which works exactly the same except with a couple of additions such as being able to show the author which is handy.
It installs just as easily and for me at least, provides a superb means of once again being able to show my latest news in a sidebar mod.
