Auto Read More Plugin

We've always wanted to be able to set up Joomla to automatically add a "Read More" link for articles in Category Blog or Section Blog Layouts so that the articles would all be the same length and they would line up just as pretty as you please. Google revealed a handful of other people attempting the same thing, but having no solution. So Mango wrote a plugin for it.

Thanks to everyone for your excellent suggestions and support of Auto Read More. Mango's plugin has already been downloaded 8,396 times! (January 2010)

Features:
*Automatically adds "Read more..." link after a configurable number of characters.
*Works on the Front Page, Category Blog, or Section Blog.
*Will not break HTML or break the article in the middle of a word.
*Configurable to ignore specific categories, sections, articles, or the Front Page.
*Commented so that you may read through the code and add your own features if you like.
*Languages: English, Spanish, and Portugese.

The latest beta version incorporates many suggestions. We welcome beta testers! Check out the website for more information.

I was looking for a simple way to cap the length of my front page articles so that they would all fit nicely in the area i wanted to fill. This plugin did the job perfectly. Kudos to the devs on this one. It's no-brainer install & config.

This is an excellent plugin and more over it's free. I use automatic full RSS to article import and this plugin inserts the READMORE button automatically. I wish it was updated for Joomla 1.7. A similar PAID extension available for Joomla 1.7 is a little behind this plugin.

Junk. The extension leaves out the images from the intro text. If I try to set 'strip formatting' to no, it disables the whole website. Uninstalled.

It's excellent! I was looking for this! Cause I'm dummie I have to look for my self and how to create a class for thumbnails. Hope this could be not necesary in the future if the author add a config parameter to make this easier. But I'm very happy with this plugin

Great plugin!

I just wanted to ask, whether it is possible to do following: I got two sections and I would need for each of those different maximum characters. Is it possible to customize plugin this way ?

this one is good only if you do not want your pictures to show up.
I installed it, enabled it and noticed :
1. articles images will not show up
2. articles images will show up ONLY if i added read more in each articles which is non sense, because i installed this to make it auto.
3. article images will show if you open the full articles, but not if it is in only introduction

the above apply in the 1.0 standard version, but for the current one 1.1, it bring an error to the whole website, so I uninstalled it immediatley.

A small bug on Thumbnail links for the Frontpage when SEO and Apache Mod_rewrite are on but should be resolved in next version i heard. Also to keep the links from the post before the read more would make this plugin perfect!

This plug-in is great, it's easy to install and use, does exactly what it says on the tin.

I had some trouble getting the link to be shown but then realised I was being a noob and need to swith on the Joomla core 'read more' links.

Thanks for a great little extention.

Great plugin, it does exactly what it says. But I wonder, is it possible to let the auto read more function only apply to the front page, but not any other section or category?
Owner's reply

We will add this feature in the next release; in the mean time you can exclude specific sections and categories if you don't have too many of them.

The latest beta is breaking the template (the page display just the title without the content or formatting). The 1.0 version is working fine
Owner's reply

You need to install the PHP Tidy extension (http://php.net/tidy) or set Strip Formatting to Yes. That should solve the problem.

Everyone seems to love this and I love the Idea of a Auto Read More, but this "strip formatting" is a bit scary and there isn't anywhere that the author addresses this. What exactly does that mean?

I surely don't want to strip the formatting from any of the pages of the site. But if you don't select yes, then you need Tidy which is a whole other server thing.

I do A Lot Of Work with Joomla sites and this is a new one to me. I dare not turn on 'strip formatting' unless I know what it means exactly. Otherwise, Auto Read More looks just great and quite straightforward.

All it says on the developer's site (in the comments) is: "Tidy can be installed as a PHP extension. Ask your systems administrator or web hosting company to install it, if you don't already have it. Any decent web host will likely already have it."

I have a decent web host and Tidy isn't on our server. So Auto Read More isn't actually just installation of a simple plug-in. It requires deal with your site administrator or doing some work on your server (like researching what Tiny is and how to use it).

I'd love to make this work.
Owner's reply

Why, yes! "Strip formatting" is positively terrifying! In fact, it should be considered with decisions along the lines of buying your first home, joining the French Foreign Legion, and naming your firstborn!

Or, you could, you know, just turn the plugin off later if you decide you don't like it.

If you use the stable version its excellent, however my site has three templates and for some reason it doesn t work on all templates in BETA, the stable version doesnt break the template.
Owner's reply

In what way does the beta break the template? Please let us know as we would be delighted to fix it.

Hello all,

First i like to say that this plugin is very good. But i have one problem. As i have on my site a lot of external rss feeds with images, in the blog listing the images dont show as a thumbnail (width 120px) but always as the full image. I have already done some CSS styling but nothing is working. Is there a solution???

Thanks a lot for this plugin and for the answer on my problem.

Greetings Eric Beerhorst

its handy and really do big job for joomla beauty and articles' customizations.

Keep the good work please.

Simply wonderful and easy to implement. There's nothing more you can ask for.

Highly recommended for anyone who has problems getting others who post articles to understand the importance of using the "read more" link.
