This module did exactly what I needed. I'm very happy that I didn't have to dig into the code myself to achieve this.
Without going into the whole, "I don't write reviews..." thing, let me say that db8 Newsflash fits the bill nicely. It displays the newsflashes cleanly and without much fanfare...just for what I was looking!
