I was so excited to finally find a photo gallery with front end uploading that looked like it would do the job. I have struggled to make Phoca work for weeks, but finally given up.
Installed hwdPS easily and went through the settings. BTW, their "documentation" isn't worth the mouse click. It's web based (no problem with that), but VERY sparse. No help at all.
They have a confusing Photo/Category/Album/Group system which I failed to understand. However, I managed to get photos uploaded to 3 albums. However, the Java uploader demanded I run something every time - very annoying.
So I have photos. I set the menu to go to the album page. Yes, 3 albums. Click an album. 4 photos. Click a photo - error! You must be logged in to view this. DOH! In the settings Category/Album/Photo all set to public access.
Go to forum. Can't post. Write access only to people who pay 30 pounds a year. I want to evaluate it at this point.

I bought the hwdvideoshare software for a client project and the quality of the software and support was truly amazing. This is some SERIOUSLY powerful software folks and the best thing possible for running a photo sharing site or for integration into a community site. Other gallery solutions are completely off the mark because they are so excessively complicated. This component is simple, straightforward and a breeze to use.

If you're looking for a photo gallery for a social site, this is the one for you.
I too have tried just about every joomla gallery out there, hwd photoshare is by far the best for front end management.
Definitely try this component if you want your user to be happy and free of headache!

I've tried pretty much every other native Joomla photo album out there in the past 4 months. None of them compare when it comes to front end management. hwdPhotoShare is the only one that does front end photo management right. I purchased a 1 year subscription and communicated with the developer on the forums. Responses were timely, and support excellent. I was hooked on this component while it was in alpha stage, but it is ready to be used for production now, and I urge everyone out there to try it.
This extension is awesome addition(addiction!) to any community sites! For me it did more than any other photo gallery components could do. PLUS, it does seemless integration with JomSocial.. which was more than i asked. Awesome! 'HWD' team worth lots of applause! I'm glad that most of the Joomla! website creators could satisfy their Photo and video features a website demands just by choosing a single team - HWD. This component fits with everything my site offers, photos and youtube/google videos. I recently decided to use the PhotoShare suite and realized that I had upgraded Joomla to 1.6. I have not attempted to install the latest version so my site is without a gallery. I look forward to the 1.6 stable legacy version of this component.
I already use the video share component so I decided that using the photoshare component would give my site's galleries some kind of continuity.
I was having issue with getting the component to work correctly and contacted the owner for some assistance. While not currently a Pro subscriber I was intending to has I wanted the additional modules for thsi and the videoshare component, they gave me excellent support in getting this component working EVEN though it was not their component problem but a issue with my SEF component.

I would say this is one of the best photo galleries you can have on your site. I love this gallery, especially the upload feature.
This component is ok but for a few problems i encountered and finally gave up on it, lost traffic on my site too. My users had problem uploading images on the front end, it always showed an error report about not being able to create jfolder even after changin all necessary folders permission, turnin off ftp layer, i found out i had to change folder permissions each time a user tries to upload. Lookin forward to seein this component fixed..

Sorry you had problems with the FTP layer. We have resolved these permission issues, and just published a new release which you can download from our website:
