Update Manager for Joomla!
Perfect. What was looking like a long task with moments of frustration took less than 1 minute. I got one error message at the start, very clearly documented. Went to the developers site and there was the fix (it was just a simple file definition I needed to do on my side and not anything related to the developer's product). Then BAM! the upgrade was done and I am back making progress.
