Everyone seems to love this and I love the Idea of a Auto Read More, but this "strip formatting" is a bit scary and there isn't anywhere that the author addresses this. What exactly does that mean?

I surely don't want to strip the formatting from any of the pages of the site. But if you don't select yes, then you need Tidy which is a whole other server thing.

I do A Lot Of Work with Joomla sites and this is a new one to me. I dare not turn on 'strip formatting' unless I know what it means exactly. Otherwise, Auto Read More looks just great and quite straightforward.

All it says on the developer's site (in the comments) is: "Tidy can be installed as a PHP extension. Ask your systems administrator or web hosting company to install it, if you don't already have it. Any decent web host will likely already have it."

I have a decent web host and Tidy isn't on our server. So Auto Read More isn't actually just installation of a simple plug-in. It requires deal with your site administrator or doing some work on your server (like researching what Tiny is and how to use it).

I'd love to make this work.

Why, yes! "Strip formatting" is positively terrifying! In fact, it should be considered with decisions along the lines of buying your first home, joining the French Foreign Legion, and naming your firstborn!

Or, you could, you know, just turn the plugin off later if you decide you don't like it.

Mosets Tree
This is a wonderful component. My taoslink.com directory of sites from Taos, NM started ten years ago as static site, the was migrated to Links Department Pro, made by a guy in Russia. That was migrated to eSyndicate with a guy from Kyrgistan. Now with the help of Lee at Mosets the new version of the site data rocks. Ease of use high. Very Excellent. Add in MoxieMaps for directories of physical places and, assuming you have the content to support it, someone viewing your site has a better experience than most other directories, particularly the phone company's. Don't hesitate to buy the Pro version. Lee even wrote a transmigration script for me. The script is available to you too if you have an eSyndicate site.
