This plugin is a match for the commercial ones in this category. I tried several ones for Joomla! 1.6, but this has been proved the best.

If you are looking for a simple, but great helpdesk solution for your business/service, then BILLETS is your choice.

First I missed the creation of my own categories in the back-end. I recommended it for the authors in their forums. The admin provided me a link in his answer to the howto description and following those instructions it was very easy to customize the categories.
