I really wanted to like this extension. It's the only free document management component that fully integrates with the Joomla ACL that I could find. It looks pretty good too, but it's just too quirky and obscure for users. The concept of adding a document to a file for metadata and permissions is seriously confusing. The work "document" means different things depending on where you are too.
And it's buggy. Creating a document on a file in the front end adds a record to the database, but it doesn't show up after saving. It knows there is one there because if you try to add another one it fails, but you can't see it in the back end either so it has to be deleted from the database. Every time you perform an operation on a file, it returns to the root folder instead of staying on the page you are working on. It took me ages to work out that you need "Access Administration Interface" permissions to edit metadata on the front end.
Back to the drawing board.

I spent about 3 months trying to get other Joomla development tools to do the job I needed, to create a gig engine for a fan site. None of them came close, so then I decided to start from scratch and write a component. I found fabrik by accident and gave it a go. To cut a long story short, this is one of the best development tools for any environment I have ever used - it did the job I needed, my site looks great and the back end admin is amazing. It is incredibly powerful "out of the box", but with all of the extensions available, and the ease with which it can be customised, it beats all of the others by a mile. I use fabrik in conjunction with CB, Kunena and Community ACL and have a site that my users are delighted with.
Just one complaint - why is it hidden in Contacts & Feedback -> Forms? There must be loads of people looking for a component like this that never find it.

This is a decent enough component, but for a commercial product, the support is awful. Like tread77's previous review, with ongoing issues I have never received more than one reply in any 24 hour period. The standard response to any enquiry is that CorePHP will be happy to fix the problem for me on a chargeable basis.
They don't read support requests properly before replying, so you end up getting answers to questions to didn't ask not the one you did. I just lost a day because the support engineer asked me to qualify what I meant when I had actually used the identical phrase he had sent to me in a question 2 days previously.
A good product, but a very poor customer experience.
