Simple Image Gallery
Excellent for small galleries. This extension has been, without a doubt, the simplest gallery plugin I've come across. I've used this on multiple websites from Joomla 1.0 upwards. Upload a bunch of images to a directory, add a tag to your article and your done! Brilliant plugin.
So good I purchased the pro version for it's extra features.

Advanced Module Manager
I've been using Joomla since 1.0.8 and this gets installed on nearly every site I manage. Definitely in my top 5 ever extensions. It's worth it for the menu filter alone. Has a huge amount of power with it's ability to lock modules to users, groups, content and more.

Excellent time-saving component. Beautifully simple, yet very powerful. Wish I'd seen this plugin before!
Also, very handy if you want a couple of people to have this level of file access without giving them ssh.

Supports background images.
Great control console.
Great CSS support.
Excellent support forums.

This is by FAR the best free menu extension I have used. In fact, it is one of the best of any kind of extension I have used for Joomla!
