We have implemented Catalog internally as our staff phone directory and externally as an events register (http://www.toowoombaRC.qld.gov.au/events). The power and flexibility of Catalog is worth the setup effort.
We have this combined with Magazine and Control (both also by the JX team) and we love it. These tools are designed for the enterprise or sophisticated Joomla implementation - not the six page home website.
I have found the development team to be very helpful and active.

We have implemented Magazine in our intranet environment (over 1,000 users) as a solution to display content in a number of different ways - easily. In this application frequently asked questions are created and categorised in one or many categories. This allows us to create a matrix giving access to our customers from one of a number of approaches.
Simply put it is a different way of thinking from the standard Joomla content model. It can take some time to get your head around but once you understand the different model you'll never look back. Creating menu links to interact with Magazine can be a bit tricky but the development team are active, professional and great to deal with!
