Easybook Reloaded
Tried out other guestbooks beforehand but Easybook Reloaded not only worked immediately but it had a nice layout and was highly configurable. I loved the simple captcha system and the email option to selected registered users (Joomla CMS) worked flawlessly. The latest entries module was also a really neat addition; it also had a thoughtful configuration. It's certainly the best Guestbook on the block as far as I'm concerned - keep up the good work Viktor!

Easy File Uploader
Tried a few other uploaders and they didn't work; this worked immediately. I wanted users to be able to upload an occasional file without the hassle of logging in. I was easily able to configure a folder, specify a single file type (ZIP) and max size of file that could be uploaded. It would have been nice to have received an email after each upload but this no big deal.

Phoca Maps
It displays maps fantastically and is likely the simplest to setup up and the best map component for Joomla. For the future, perhaps a variety of small and simple coloured pin and dot type markers could be added to use with wide area maps.

Akeeba Backup
I backed up my subdomain website (100Mb) and transferred it to a totally new domain in only 30 minutes without any problem; everything worked flawlessly and I didn't even read the manual since the instructions provided were so thoughtful and clear. I had previously spent countless hours unsuccessfully using another (Xpletive removed) commercial ($50) backup/restore component.

EasyTable
I was looking for something that would display a dazzling Excel file or two on my new website. This extension displays Excel file data in the CSV format quickly and intuitively; I had no problem transferring the data and displaying it. There is also a wealth of options and hence 5 stars.

Unfortunately, the imported CSV format (Excel formatting commands removed) will provide a very bare bones display on any website and you need to be a CSS programmer to modify (add additional commands) to the CSS files in use by your template if you want to add colour and/or font effects to the spreadsheet.

On reviewing the forum, the lack of example CSS codes has already been raised and the reply was that a CSS file would not be made available as there were already too many CSS files in use and users should modify their existing CSS files. Incredibly, a link was given and it simply explained how to access the CSS files from the backend.

I'm not a CSS programmer and without example CSS codes showing how and where they can be placed in, say, a default Joomla template, I won't be able to use this extension and will revert to using tables in the interim period.

Communicator
This is an exceptionally simple and effective newsletter system that easily deserves 5 stars but unfortunately, the presentation here doesn't do it any justice.

Not having used a newsletter option before, I was put off by the lack of documentation & demo (or screen shots), the download section was confusing and there was no way to pass word onto the developer - even their unhelpful remarks in the forum was a put off.

It was only after reading the reviews here and after trial and error that I found the correct file (module at the end of the download page) to install and configure it. By this time, the enclosed instruction had become superfluous.

The developers have certainly invested their time into making an excellent newsletter system but in return, they should not have to ask users to invest their time into guessing whether this extension might work for them.

mavik Thumbnails
It worked immediately and is perfect for allowing quick and easy adjustment to the size of thumbnails and then zooming as required. This is definitely a 'should try first' extension. Pity the demo button takes you to the website which is in Russian; I couldn't figure out where or what I should be clicking to see the demo in action and was initially reluctant to use it!

This doesn't work with inline images and newer browsers as the author has stopped developing it. Pity really because it has the right simplicity to enlarge graphics in an article.
