I have a large Sobi2 hobby directory, the entries of which I added myself, and I wanted to wait until my website was finished before sending a message to everyone welcoming them to my website. The Sobi2 mailing plugin made it easy to do this and it had a progress bar showing me how many messages had been sent (I sent over 1000).
I now use it to send newsletters and 'latest news posts'. I can easily send different emails to different hobby clubs based on what Sobi2 category they're in. But what's better is that I can choose any of my custom fields to decide who to receives the email. e.g. I can send a message only to clubs in a particular London Borough. This is very useful.
