Custom Properties ComponentModulePluginLanguage

With Custom Properties you can define your own properties/tags and label the content items.
Every property becomes a searchable field in the frontend module cp_search. It can be used to organize and re-organize your contents and to create new ways of searching articles.
With the recently added module mod_cpcloud, all tags can be displayed as tags cloud.
The tags can be displayed before, after or anywhere in the middle of articles.
CP Tags can be searched by means of standard Joomla search feature (J15 only).

Features:
- infinite field / values
- configurable and skinnable
- does NOT alter the default Joomla! installation
- simple-yet-powerful
- compatible with Joom!Fish for multi-language sites
- includes English,Italian,Arabic language for frontend (only ver 0.97)
- limit search results
- each field can be displayed in all/some/one search module
- added support for frontend tagging operations.
- a drill-down result summary can be displayed before actual results.
- results can be sorted by section/category
- usability improvements in the backend
- cp tags can be appended to meta keywords too
- SEF compatible
- version for Joomla 1.5 is built using the new MVC framefork.
- multi search module
- configurable search scope
- tags cloud module

The new version - available for J1.0 and for J1.5 - introduces new , almost unique, features:

- tag third party content elements via plugins. BookLibray and Docman installed as defaults
- much improved tagging from the frontend
- tag in page title
- image thumbnails in search results
- selectable search results format: HTML introtext, plain text, only title
- selectable module layout : tables or divs
- core SEF compatible
- sh404SEF compatible
- installer for easy install / upgrade
- more languages : Russian, Swedish, Greek, ...

Current versions :
Joomla 1.0 (>= 1.0.11) : 0.98
Joomla 1.5 (= 1.5.23 is better) : 1.98.3.4

BTW: most of the requested features (or lack thereof) have been added in version 1.98. It's been quite an effort so feel free to donate :)
- version 1.98.3 fixes some issues with thumbnail creation.
- version 1.98.3.3 fixes the infamous 'timezone' bug the
prevented newly created articles to be retrieved for some hours.
- version 1.98.3.4 fixes a small bug with 'page title' and is PHP 5.3 compliant

This provides an almost perfect solution for my company! The component installed without problems, there's good information on the developer's site (although more documentation would be very helpful) and for the most part it's relatively simple to use. I would recommend creating a button for the editor that will allow users to add properties to an article while the article is being submitted. Editing properties from the front-end is not very intuitive and this is the part that we're currently modifying. Other than that I love this component!

It installs correctly, but I don't have a clue when it comes to getting it to work properly. I can't add a Custom Property to an article, and I can't View/Edit the articles inside this component (resulting in either a strange or no message(s)).

Unfortunately there's no documentation available, so I can't fix it myself. It probably has something to do with a conflict with another component I installed...

This works great, thank you. Note to users on php4 - be sure to change Script Position under Config to embedded to get this to work.

Here's a lot of good components around for Joomla. But Custom Properties - is the Best.
Here's why:
- Simple to use
- Do exactly what it should do
- Flexible
- Great Tags Implementation

Great Job and Thanks.
I'm ready to donate but I can't find on the website "Donations" part :).

I like it but it has two major drawbacks. It isn't compatible with sh404sef and you can't automatically add tags to articles. If I have 1000 articles how do i add tags to all of them ? In an article site where also users can submit articles it is pain to add tags to every article in the backend. It is a good idea, if no tags are submitted, to automatically add tags based on keywords.
Owner's reply

Thanks for the review and for the suggestions.
- compatibility with sh404sef is currently being developed
- you can add tags massively using the backend (even to 1000 articles at once)
- users can add tags (1 article at a time) from the frontend
- adding tags from keywords goes against CP "philosophy". Keywords are freetext, while CP uses DB defined fields and values.

To really harness the power of this component, it would be beneficial for the developer to create a Virtuemart Plugin. This component is great by itself for "content" in Joomla, but would even be better if it had a Virtuemart plugin, or capabilities to write quick scripts to incorporate into Virtuemart or other components. Furthermore, this plugin would especially benefit online stores which have a huge product base and need a way to present it to the customer, without the customer clicking multiple times to find product.

Nonetheless, Excellent WORK! By far this is one of the best components for Joomla.

Custom Properties is just a very flexible system for creating and assigning tags, making it possible to classify your site's content in many ways outside the rigid Section/Category structure. I have just scraped the surface of possible uses, and loving it already.

The Search module offers website users an easy and flexible way of drilling down into specific content, perfect if you have a more complicated content classification.

The frontend tag editing possibility by assigned users is another added bonus.

This component's only problem is that it makes the webmaster think about the site's content organisation in a completely different way :-)

Great component, excellent coding and very helpful developers. Star stuff!

This extension is *exactly* what I was needing for a project I'm working on - works great in Joomla! 1.5.4 -- and as an added bonus, the developer is very responsive!

This is what I was looking for! Great work :)

I had to find a way to classify articles in more than just sections and categories, and make them searchable...this enabled me to do it easily...

Took me a few minutes to figure out how everything works, and now it....just works! :)

Suggestion: it would be nice if you could tag the articles as you write them...going back and assigning tags to them afterwards ain't really that complex...but, it would just be nicer if you could do it right away...

Is there hope for the J!1.5 version soon?

Great work! Thanks :)

I'm very impressed by the overall quality of this component, looks simple but do a lot !

Very handy and intuitive, this component perfects a features Joomla's core lacks : a good and fast way to browse through content, when traditionnal browsing or search aren't enough.

However, to fully suits my need I would expect that the module could use parameters to selects which custom property to display, so we can duplicate the module and configure them independently to fit different category thematics.

Keep up the good work :)

I have been looking for this for a while and nothing worked quite right. Allows you to create entries that can be searched. Minor inconvenience to have to go to another page to assign.

Easy to install, easy to use, looks great.

No problems so far. Thank you!!

i think this component is great and it should definitely progress more...

A remark i should make is that there is a problem when the database is in utf8_general_ci collation. The code builds i think swedish_latin tables and fields so the records in database get messed up, or some of them are not recorder at all (char 50 fieds). A fix for this problem would be appreciated because there are languages (like greek :)) which can not be supported by swedish_latin collation...

Anyhow great component with great potential. Should be developed more though!
Owner's reply

It seems that "strange" characters keeps plaguing this component.
In this case, the problem should be somewhere else, because the charset of the tables are not set by CustomProperties installer.
BTW: there are sites using CustomProperties with charsets even more exotic than greek ;)

I loved the idea, it's great for building a great advanced search and organize articles. Good to a simple listing. Easy to install and use.

Would be just dream perfect if it had a frontend management of some sort.

This is the addon, I've always dreamed of. It can be used either as tag component or as an advanced search engine, or ... both.
Very easy to configure and to use. Adapt the layout to your site is quite easy with the css classes provided. I plan to use it as a related item component (only with checkboxes and a small custom module I'll developp soon).
Thanks a lot for this contribution :-)
Even if there is a small problem with the special characters é for example I give 5 stars !!!
Owner's reply

Thank you for the review.
The problem with special chars has been fixed with version 0.96.
