I've read the reviews and noted the criticism about this extension (and others like it) being server-resource intensive. With a 'tool' as comprehensive as this, there are bound to be overheads but before you dismiss it as undesirable, consider the advantages and use it for its intended purpose.
JoomlaStats is a tool that will show you detailed visitor information so you can identify their locations, the times of peak activity, which pages they visit and much more. However, it isn't a 'novice' tool so if you don't understand what it does, you really don't need it.
The advantages of using this extension are many but take as an example attempted hits on your Guest Book by people (not just bots) leaving inappropriate comments. the chances are that they are based somewhere like China or Brazil but knowing this for certain will permit you to exclude their country IP address either in cPanel or your .htaccess file.
Once you have a decent overview of website use, you will have the knowledge to target your prospective visitors whilst excluding those whose attention is unwelcome.
Likewise, you will be able to identify those 'bots' that visit your website and deal with them appropriately.
Having achieved a satisfactory compromise and in order to avoid disproportionate loading of the server, you may disable or even uninstall the extension - but don't write it off completely.
My advice would be to use this extension judiciously and for a specific purpose that you define before you install it. It is a first class extension in its class and will do everything it claims to do. Use it wisely and it will help you to manage your website to best effect. Use it unwisely and you will slow down your website for no good reason and probably lose traffic because of it.
I give this extension full marks but advise caution about intensive or extended use, especially on larger websites. It has done the job I asked of it and will remain in my arsenal of 'tools' until I need it again. Well done to the developers and many thanks.

On first blush, this plugin appears to work great. But I first had to hide a JoomlaStats Activation module... but then I discovered this thing is counting bot hits. In the first week, over a hundred of bogus page views. When you go to exclude them in the control panel, you can't click their checkboxes then exclude the whole bunch - you have to exclude them one by one. A couple posts relating to this topic on their forum have simply gone unanswered. I will watch for updates and upgrade my review when fixes arrive, but for now, I will continue to rely on awstats.
Instead of writing a long review, I'll just sum it up in one sentence.
"AN ABSOLUTELY PERFECT, EASY TO USE, OUT OF THE BOX WEBSITE STATS TRACKING COMPONENT FOR YOUR JOOMLA WEBSITE." I was waiting for Joomla 1.5 - You've made my day!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! AAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++++++

after using the extension i get an email from my hosting at siteground.com stating that:
" With this notification we would like to inform you that your account *********.com consumes a very high percentage of the server resources and thus affects the performance of the whole shared server."
Executed 0 min ago for 2 sec on Database -->
SELECT count(*) AS nbr_of_visits, w.tld AS tld, t.fullname AS full_name, count(*) AS total_visits FROM jos_jstats_ipaddresses w LEFT JOIN jos_jstats_topleveldomains t ON(t.tld = w.tld) LEFT JOIN jos_jstats_visits v ON(v.visitor_id = w.id) WHERE (w.tld NOT IN ('mk')) AND (1=1) AND w.type=1 GROUP BY tld ORDER BY nbr_of_visits DESC, t.fullname ASC
SO AS A RESULT i was force to uninstall the extension, and lossing all the data .
I dont know if anyone had the same results, or if this is due to pure performance from my hosting (siteground.com)
they have Suspended my Account fro a whole day....

I love JoomlaStats. True you can do many of these things with other analytics packages, but this is a great alternative to some of them. I'm not entirely sure if this would be a good alternative to Urchin for those stuck behind firewalls, but if it is, free sure is nice. I'm running this on a few of my sites now and it really is effective and accurate. JoomlaStats gives you quality information.
If you do not want to use statistics inserting a tracking code for any external statistic tool, this is a really good solution! You get to know nearly anything about your visitors, it is easy to handle and understand.
No problems with installation or set up - I had to insert the activating code as I use 11 templates and it is working instantly!

I don't think I'm going to use my Google Analytics account anymore. It seems that this component has absolutely everything.
I really appreciate the work you did with this component + modules guy! Best of luck with future improvements!
P.S. It took me less than 2 minutes to install and get it running.

It is with regret that I write this to state that I first tried this module in the early versions of Joomla v1.0 a few years ago to find that it did not record any data or display any data on the back end then, and again in 2010 with Joomla 15.15, with all required activator modules and components and extra visitor modules it looks good when viewed in the back end, but it records no data or statistics, except to show the visitor his browser, IP etcetera on the front end.
The sadder part is that there is no support to correct this issue of lack of data.
I found several of instances of others with the same problem, but they too had no reply or solution from the developers site forum, even after many months of having requested assistance.
When uninstalling, if you do not use the 'uninstall' removal option from the component tools menu, you will have to manually go and remove the corresponding tables from the Joomla database for this component.
A real pity I could not get it to work, then, and again now, as it does really look good in the back end.
Had it worked, I also wonder how accurate the data would be, having read some of the other feedback reports on this same component.
