It's free and opensource, native for Joomla! 1.5 and released under GNU/GPL2.0 license.
In order to use Imenu just install it as a standard module, edit its configuration from Extensions -> Modules management and select:
* which menu has to be displayed with this style ( you can only have 1 Imenu per site )
* background color ( currently avaible: black, green, red, yellow, blue )
* SEF/SEO configuration, according to your Joomla! configuration
Then you have to assign a specific image to each menu item.
In order to do this just:
* upload menu items images in your /images/stories/ folder
* edit ( through menus management ) each menu item assigning an image to every item ( from System parameters )
Tips and trick, ToDo and known issues
* Imenu works with well-manufactured template : you can see it in action, for example, with ( this one ) JA purity ( we cannot ensure compatibility with all third party templates : we can give you a bit of assistance Occhiolino )
* Imenu works fine with SEF and .htaccess enabled ( no matter about .html suffix )
* Imenu works fine with non up-down sliding pages
* we recommend you tu use .png transparent images for menu items ( 128x128 pixels is the best way to make it work fine )
You have to be grateful with ndesign-studio: the most important part of the menu ( the JavaScript ) is written by it, we just re-adapted it to Joomla! 1.5.

cool working. very nice. i want to open menus lik target at new window. can i open links to new window ?
simple, useful, very cool; only a little problem that made me lose time: in IE8 the icon don't move on mouseover if the module is not set in a position where you see it; for example, it's positioned in the "top", you see in the footer, mouseover is not working; it's positioned in the "footer", you see in the footer, mouseover is working correctly
very cool, having a few hiccups. Chrome problem as per its origins.
